Cauliflower becomes a "prosperity flower" for the villagers of Gaojiapu in Shenzhou, Hebei

A few days ago, I came to the fields of Gaojiapu Village, Qiaotun Township, Shenzhou City, and saw golden cauliflower stretching as far as the eye could see, with people scattered in the distance working hard…… Village Party branch secretary Miao Genwei walked over and introduced warmly: "Our village has been cultivating cauliflower seeds for more than 10 years. Right now it is the flowering period, and in about a month it will be harvest time. These flowers are all the 'prosperity flowers' of us ordinary folks!"

Gaojiapu Village was once a traditional agricultural village, with only more than 400 people and 800 mu of cultivated land, and the villagers mainly grew field crops such as wheat and corn. To promote farmers' income growth, with strong support from the Party committee and government of Qiaotun Township, the village relied on its location advantage of being close to the Sulin Line provincial highway and set the work goal of "adjusting the planting structure and promoting farmers' income growth." In 2000, the village "two committees" established contact with the Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences through the relative relationship of villager Miao Chunnian. After actively pursuing the matter, they finally signed an agreement with the academy and introduced a high-end cauliflower seed cultivation project.

Once there was a path to prosperity, the fellow villagers did not accept it. While carrying out publicity and mobilization, the village "two committees" took the lead in cauliflower seed cultivation. As a result, the growers tasted the benefits that very year, which led more and more people to join in. According to the agreement, the academy was responsible for providing seeds each year and buying back all of them after maturity, and the villagers gradually became proficient in the cultivation techniques. Before winter arrived each year, the villagers built simple greenhouses in advance, sowed the cauliflower seeds around New Year's Day, and after the spring temperature rose, transplanted them to the farmland, so they could be harvested before the wheat harvest.

Miao Genwei did some calculations: "Cauliflower seed cultivation only requires laying enough base fertilizer, watering twice in spring, and spraying pesticide once or twice, so the labor cost is almost half that of growing wheat, but the income is double." It is understood that cauliflower seed cultivation yields about 100 kg per mu, with an average income of more than 3,000 yuan per mu. At the same time, because cauliflower seed cultivation has a short growing period and is finished before the wheat harvest, it also extends the growing period of summer grain crops such as corn, and the summer grain yield is also noticeably higher than that of other growers.

Now, cauliflower seed cultivation in Gaojiapu Village has become a local specialty, and has also led surrounding villages onto the path to prosperity together. At present, cauliflower seed cultivation in the village and nearby Linjiapu Village has reached more than 200 mu, and the villagers' annual income is more than 600,000 yuan. Miao Genwei said confidently: "Because cauliflower seed cultivation cannot be too close to the highway, further expansion of the scale is restricted. In the future, we will strengthen communication and contact with the academy of agricultural sciences, introduce more agricultural science and technology projects, and lead the fellow villagers to achieve a moderately prosperous life as soon as possible."
