Nanjiang: Ecological cattle farming spawns multiple paths to prosperity

On September 21, the author walked into Qingbai Village, Changchi Town, Nanjiang County, and saw green pastures stretching one after another and cattle sheds lined up one after another. "These cattle sheds were just built by the poor households in the village. This year at least 15 poor households in this village can shake off poverty through cattle farming," the town's official said.

Cattle farm becomes the "key" to shaking off poverty and achieving prosperity

"Look, on the pairing assistance card for Party members and officials, we have clearly written the people's net income, the causes of poverty, the assistance measures and the annual income growth targets, all clear at a glance." Fu Dengquan, the village Party secretary of Qingbai Village who was accompanying us, took out the assistance card while walking. "In our targeted poverty alleviation work, we have clearly identified the cause of poverty for every poor household, and then implemented different assistance measures according to different situations. As it happens, of the 62 poor households with 200 people in the whole village, 6 households with 21 people shook off poverty last year, 7 households with 25 people have already shaken off poverty in the first half of this year, and it is estimated that 10 households with 31 people can shake off poverty in the second half of the year.

Fu Dengquan explained that whether the villagers can shake off poverty and achieve prosperity depends on the cattle farm. At present, the village plans to raise 5,000 head of cattle. Villagers can work at the cattle farm, for example feeding cattle, cleaning, cutting grass and so on, earning about 100 yuan a day. For those villagers who do not have very strong labor capacity, this is a very good opportunity.

"Villagers can not only work at the cattle farm, but can also take calves home to raise themselves. Each cow can be fed to 2,000 jin and sold for about 8,000 yuan. At the beginning, they do not need to pay any money; they just take the calf home to raise. When it is ready to be sold, the farm purchases it at market price and then deducts the money for the calf. This solves both the villagers' funding problem for buying cattle and their difficulty in selling them, achieving two goals at once." Fu Dengquan laid out the cattle farm's full plan for helping farmers get rich.

The profitability of the entire industrial chain

For those farming households that do not know how to raise cattle, or do not have the ability to raise cattle, the village has also opened up another path to prosperity - growing grass. Each jin of grass is purchased at a price of 2.5 jiao, and it is not very troublesome, with low technical requirements, so it is very easy for the villagers to increase income and get rich.

Walking into the farm, the large-scale sheds are built in belt-like strips along the mountain terrain. "This is Shed No. 1. The cattle introduced from other places are not used to the temperature and environment here at first, so we have to let the cattle 'relax' for a while..." Fu Dengquan pointed to the sheds and gave the author a detailed introduction to the function of each shed. The author saw that the cattle farm's biogas digester, solar energy, sewage treatment plant and other facilities are all fully equipped, and all are used in a circular manner.

"We want to develop a chain-style circular industry and at the same time spawn multiple industries." Zhao Ju, the person in charge of the cattle farm company, pointed to Shed No. 3 and said that this is a place for processing cow dung. The originally smelly cow dung is hauled here, covered with some dry straw, and immediately earthworms in the ground drill up in clusters, pouncing on this pile of "delicacy." This not only solves the waste problem, but also transforms it into considerable economic benefits.

Zhao Ju explained that the method of using cow dung to raise earthworms is very simple; cow dung, straw and other materials are all that is needed as feed material. Under the above good growth conditions, adult earthworms and young earthworms reproduce and grow in overlapping generations, and the individual number and weight of the earthworm population increase day by day. After the earthworms grow up, they are sold as fish bait or used to raise yellow eels and loaches.

The cattle farm is a platform for getting rich and can spawn multiple paths to prosperity. Growing grass, working at the cattle farm, taking calves home to raise, and raising earthworms are only part of it. Zhao Ju said that the cattle farm wants to build a brand and drive the entire industrial chain through deep processing. This not only concerns the healthy development of the entire beef industry chain, but also improves the profitability of all members of the entire industrial chain.
