Xiao Chuanyou: starting from scratch in chicken farming to escape poverty and grow rich

In the full-swing poverty alleviation effort, more and more poor people are gradually shaking off poverty, and Xiao Chuanyou, a villager of Xinmin Village, Xin'an Town, Pingshan County, is one of them. Recently, the author walked into the Xinsheng Native Chicken Farm in Xin'an Town and visited Xiao Chuanyou, a poor villager, to learn his "secrets to wealth".

Group 4 of Xinmin Village, Xin'an Town, Pingshan County, is arguably the "plateau" of Xin'an Town; describing the local production and living conditions as "barren mountains and wild waters" would not be an exaggeration. The 11 km of road from Xinmin Village to the town seat of Xin'an Town is steep slope the whole way, and the per-capita paddy field in the group is less than 0.5 mu, most of it "rain-fed fields" that depend on the sky. Facing few fields, sparse forest and widespread poverty, Xiao Chuanyou once felt he had no place to use his talents, and his own circumstances did not allow him to go out to work.

"Is going out to work really the only way out for us?" Watching the mountain village remain unchanged for decades while the world beyond the mountains changed with each passing day, Xiao Chuanyou kept asking himself this, and he firmly believed that with his intelligence and hardworking hands he could certainly carve out a road to prosperity of his own.

The first step is always the hardest. After half a year of market research and taking national policies into account, Xiao Chuanyou found that raising chickens under the forest was a path well suited to his own development, and he had several hundred mu of woodland he could use.

Once he set his sights on the chicken-farming business, he acted at once. Xiao Chuanyou took out less than 10,000 yuan in savings, borrowed 50,000 yuan from the credit union and 100,000 yuan from relatives to build chicken coops. After the coops were built, and after studying the market, Xiao Chuanyou borrowed money to buy 3,000 chicks.

What to do without skills? Xiao Chuanyou bought books on chicken-farming techniques, taught himself via the internet on his phone, learned from other large-scale chicken farmers and groped for experience, throwing himself wholeheartedly into the chicken farm. He asked staff from the animal husbandry station and technicians from other chicken farms to teach him how to give injections to the chickens and prevent and control disease. In learning to give injections, he ruined countless syringes, and he learned to judge the chickens' illnesses on his own. In the end, through constant trial and error, Xiao Chuanyou accumulated a great deal of chicken-farming experience.

Today, with the strong support of relatives and friends, Xiao Chuanyou buys a batch of chicks every month to raise free-range, and he has also set up the Xinsheng Native Chicken Farming Professional Cooperative. He wins the market with the quality of his native chicken meat, and the good quality keeps his native chickens in short supply, achieving preliminary contract farming. Driven by Xiao Chuanyou, some of the poor villagers in Xinmin Village who had been taking a wait-and-see attitude have already sprung into action, finding a road to shared prosperity deep in the mountains.
