10 years of research, scientific and technological integration into sweet orange cultivation, driving farmers to increase income and get rich

At Xishanping, Beibei District, fruit farmers are picking sweet oranges.

Since the beginning of winter, a casual glance at fruit stalls shows that golden-yellow citrus is especially dazzling and eye-catching. Yesterday, the reporter came to Xishanping in Dongyang Street, Beibei District. Fruit trees on the mid-slope were covered with golden-yellow sweet oranges, and local fruit farmers were busy picking, sorting, packaging and storing the sweet oranges. Although these sweet oranges look no different from ordinary citrus, they are all selenium-enriched SOD (superoxide dismutase) sweet oranges full of patented technology.

"This kind of sweet orange has extremely high technological content. It was developed by professors from Southwest University and China Agricultural University after nearly 10 years of collaborative research, and is called selenium-enriched SOD sweet orange." Lin Hong, vice president of the Municipal Association of Old Science and Technology Workers and head of Guoyou Agricultural Development Company, introduced that compared with ordinary citrus, this sweet orange tastes thick-fleshed, juicy and sweet, with a more delicate texture. In the mature season, ordinary citrus can sell for about 5 yuan per jin, while this kind of sweet orange can sell for as much as more than 20 yuan per jin!

In addition, Lin Hong also brought experts and professors to carry out extensive outreach locally, teaching farmers hand by hand how to grow sweet oranges. This solved the employment problem of hundreds of local farmers. "With the support of advanced technology, this year's sweet oranges have had another bumper harvest, and the total output is expected to exceed 80,000 jin, enabling us fruit farmers to increase our income," local fruit farmers told the reporter.
