"Mushroom Girls" Venture into the World: How Suixian Mushrooms Lead Farmers to Prosperity

Towering Lishan, the hometown of Emperor Yan. In ancient times there was the legend of Shennong tasting a hundred herbs; today there is the celebrated tale of the "Mushroom Girls" from the mountain valleys venturing into the world.

The beautiful mountains and rivers and the mild climate of Suixian County, Hubei Province, provide good soil for the growth of the "Mushroom Girls" and have also made the beautiful "Mushroom Girls" a shining calling card of Suixian.

Suixian currently has more than 300,000 people engaged in the edible fungi industry, with 160 million bags of shiitake mushrooms planted annually; it has built 3 edible fungi processing parks and more than 60 leading enterprises, producing over 65,000 tons of edible fungi annually, with an annual output value of nearly 20 billion yuan. At the same time, Suixian shiitake mushrooms have also entered more than 50 countries and regions, generating over 400 million USD in foreign exchange annually, ranking first in the province and among the top nationwide; Suixian has become a national "10,000-ton Edible Fungi Standardized Production Demonstration County," the largest shiitake mushroom trading and distribution center in Central China, and a regional spawn production and supply base.

Over nearly 30 years of development, Suixian shiitake mushrooms have gradually achieved a leap from small-scale log cultivation to factory-based bag substrate production, and from "hawking baskets at the market" to "selling to the world," forming an industrial pattern of large-scale base production, large-market trading, large-scale processing, and large-volume exports.

However, in the early days of Suixian's shiitake mushroom industry, farmers all planted and sold in their own fields. This fragmented marketing model meant local shiitake mushroom growers often worried about sales channels, and prices remained low. To address this, the local government and industry and commerce authorities proactively helped these "Mushroom Girls" from the mountain valleys make connections and find "in-laws," gradually forming a farmer-supermarket direct purchasing model that solved the sales problem, and the shiitake mushroom market subsequently experienced demand exceeding supply. With the help of the industry and commerce authorities, Suixian's shiitake mushroom growers also registered and established farmers' professional cooperatives and agricultural product-related companies.

To help mushroom farmers maximize their interests and promote the growth and expansion of local shiitake mushroom enterprises, the Suixian Administration for Industry and Commerce proactively connected with mushroom farmers, shiitake mushroom planting professional cooperatives, processing enterprises, and industry associations, helping everyone build trademark and brand awareness, popularizing trademark and brand knowledge, providing one-on-one full-process precision guidance services in trademark cultivation, application, and use, helping enterprises formulate trademark strategies and brand cultivation plans, and forming independent brands. Currently, Suixian has a total of 110 edible fungi and shiitake mushroom trademarks, including the Suixian Shiitake Mushroom Geographical Indication Certification Trademark, the Caodian Flower Shiitake Collective Trademark, and Hubei Province famous trademarks such as Dahongshan, Sanligang, Chupinyuan, and Yuguo.

As trademark and brand awareness grew, Suixian shiitake mushroom enterprises launched their own trademark brands one after another. However, due to the large number of shiitake mushroom processing enterprises and uneven product quality, disorderly competition arose, which in turn reduced the overall competitiveness of Suixian shiitake mushrooms.

In response to this situation, while helping enterprises cultivate their own brands, the Suixian Administration for Industry and Commerce proposed helping Suixian shiitake mushroom processing enterprises and industry associations apply for the Suixian Shiitake Mushroom Geographical Indication Certification Trademark. This proposal received a positive response from the Suixian Edible Fungi Association and strong support from the Suixian government. At the end of October 2014, the Suixian Administration for Industry and Commerce began guiding the Suixian Edible Fungi Association to organize materials and apply for registration of the Suixian Shiitake Mushroom Geographical Indication Certification Trademark.

In November 2015, Suixian finally successfully registered the Suixian Shiitake Mushroom Geographical Indication Certification Trademark, uniformly dressing these "Mushroom Girls" from the mountain valleys in the beautiful "coat" of "Suixian Shiitake Mushroom." To ensure the Suixian Shiitake Mushroom Geographical Indication Certification Trademark is used well and effectively, the Suixian Administration for Industry and Commerce organized shiitake mushroom planting cooperatives, processing enterprises, and mushroom farmer representatives to hold a special meeting, helping the Edible Fungi Association further improve the rules for the use and management of the Suixian Shiitake Mushroom Geographical Indication Certification Trademark, clarifying usage conditions, application procedures, and the rights and obligations of licensees, and unifying product packaging design.

With the shining calling card of "Suixian Shiitake Mushroom," it is believed that the "Mushroom Girls" will surely don beautiful attire, wear sweet smiles, and journey to even more distant places.
