Land in the city center can be described as every inch of soil worth every inch of gold, and using it for agricultural development is absolutely not a good idea. But on January 13, a Nanguo Metropolis Daily reporter saw in the Taiheyuan villa area on Zhengyi Road in Haikou that this beautiful three-story villa was not used for living, but had been converted by its "wealthy" owner into a house for growing Dendrobium officinale. The rooftop and the villa's garden were entirely planted with Dendrobium officinale, and one floor was specially used as a laboratory.
According to villa owner Wang Fenghe, he comes from Beijing and came to Haikou early on to do rosewood business, and had accumulated some savings. The villa now converted into a Dendrobium officinale planting base covers more than 140 sq m and has a market price of around 4 million, and was purchased by him in Haikou in his early years. To convert it into a planting base, he spent more than 1 million on renovation. Last year, while chatting with a friend who has diabetes, he learned that after long-term use of fresh Dendrobium officinale, the friend's diabetes complications had been greatly relieved, so Wang Fenghe came up with the idea of growing and selling Dendrobium officinale.
The first two times, because his grasp of the technology was not sufficient, the seedlings Wang Fenghe introduced did not achieve large-scale production, and he lost several hundred thousand at once. Only later, by hiring experts from Hainan University for guidance, did he succeed in growing it. Because Dendrobium officinale now sells for around a thousand yuan per kilogram in Hainan, and many people have never actually seen it, he came up with the idea of growing it in the city so that people could visit and truly understand Dendrobium officinale, which is why he converted the villa he bought into a Dendrobium officinale planting base. At present, besides this villa-based Dendrobium officinale planting base in Hainan, Wang Fenghe has also rented more than ten mu of land in Baoting, preparing to grow it on a large scale in Baoting.
According to Liu Guomin, a professor at the School of Agriculture of Hainan University, the current selling price of Hainan Dendrobium officinale is indeed about one thousand yuan per kilogram. Based on his investigation of the industry, he learned that the total planting area across the island is around 300 mu, mainly distributed in the Baoting and Wuzhishan areas. The output value of Dendrobium officinale per mu is very high. If managed reasonably, one mu can produce around 400 kg of fresh Dendrobium officinale herb in a full year. Dendrobium officinale is an excellent health-care medicinal herb and is one of the "nine great life-saving immortal herbs" in traditional Chinese medicine. Dendrobium officinale is rich in polysaccharides, which can not only enhance immune function but also resist aging. In the Shennong Bencao Jing, it is called a sacred medicine with the effect of "lightening the body and prolonging life."
Liu Guomin said that Wang Fenghe's launching of a planting base in the city can allow more people to personally come into contact with and understand Dendrobium officinale. It not only helps consumers truly understand the characteristics of Dendrobium officinale, but can also establish a promotional window for Dendrobium officinale. This approach is worthy of recognition. (Reporter Zhang Qiwang)
