The Road to Wealth Through Goose Farming - "Goose Manager" Talks About Geese

During the Spring Festival, the reporter drove to the well-known "goose farmingvillage" in Buhai Town, Dehui City, Jilin Province - Paozi Village. Under the leadership of Kang Junshan, chairman of Junshan Breeding Professional Cooperative, more than 300 nearby farming households began embarking on thegoose farmingpath to wealth.

"At the very beginning, we also used traditional methods for incubation. Influenced by my old father, we would lay hot water bags on a heated brick bed, place a hundred or so breeding eggs on the bags, and cover the eggs with thick cotton quilts. This traditional method was not only time-consuming and labor-intensive, but temperature and humidity were also hard to control, so the hatching success rate was not high. But now things are different. Look, inside our incubators, the temperature and humidity are constant. We've also hired an incubation master from Sichuan to take careful care of them, so the hatching survival rate can be guaranteed." Kang Junshan said to the reporter while introducing the operation.

In the workshop of the incubation room, the reporter saw two full rows of modern large-scale incubators come into view. "Now is still not the best time to hatch goslings. The outdoor temperature is still a bit low, and it's hard for farming households to keep goslings alive even if they buy them and take them home. After the Spring Festival, in March and April, that's when we'll be really busy," Kang Junshan said.

Orders are placed online in advance, and the cooperative has also set up its own website, adopting an order-based sales model, which is convenient and fast. "In a little while, these machines will all work together. To ensure an adequate supply of goslings, we use a stepped production method, hatching each batch of breeding eggs at five-day intervals. This way, every four or five days, tens of thousands of goslings break out of their shells. Our goslings are sold far and wide across the country, and we also have quite a few orders from the south, like Zhejiang, Anhui and other places. For out-of-town deliveries, we use air freight to reduce losses."

In 2012, Kang Junshan and his wife jointly established the breeding professional cooperative. Other small goose-farming households in the village also joined the cooperative. Kang Junshan has rich farming experience, and the cooperative provides comprehensive services from seed selection, brooding, and epidemic prevention, helping farming households learn scientific goose-farming methods and ensuring the quantity and quality of goose farming for nearby households.

"We hatch local breeds, known by the scientific name Changbai goose, which is suitable for farming in Northeast China. The hatching survival rate can reach 80%. In the future, we plan to introduce new breeds - goslings suitable for farming in southern regions. The economic benefits are still quite considerable," introduced Kang Junshan's wife, Huang Deyan.

Kang Junshan did a calculation for the reporter. "The market price cost of each breeding egg is about 4 yuan, and the price of goslings is 7 to 8 yuan. From March and April all the way to October in autumn, we hatch about 600,000 goslings, with an annual net profit of about 400,000 yuan." Kang Junshan is satisfied with the income.

Now life is better, and the cooperative is getting on track. While reaping returns, the couple has not forgotten the local people. Kang Junshan often says: "Being rich yourself doesn't count as being rich. You have to lift the whole village to prosperity and get rich together - only then can wealth last."
