New milk strawberry variety helps farmers get rich
When it comes to Old Chen's milk strawberries, everyone in Shihuangdi Village, young and old, knows about them. In order to taste just how delicious these strawberries really are and find out what the growing secrets are, the reporter came to Old Chen's strawberry greenhouse in Shihuangdi Village, Diaobingshan City.
After driving past the Shihuangdi Village committee office and making several more turns, we finally arrived at our destination. Stepping into one of the strawberry sheds, a wave of heat hit our faces, with the temperature a full 30-plus degrees. When the down-to-earth couple saw guests had arrived, they quickly greeted us with smiling faces and casually picked some strawberries for the reporter to eat. These strawberries truly lived up to their reputation, sweet and tart, with an especially good texture.
Old Chen, as he is called, is named Chen Lei, and he has been doing greenhouse growing for many years. In earlier years he grew vegetables, but in recent years, by learning from experience elsewhere, he took up strawberry growing, and all 4 of the greenhouses he runs are planted with strawberries. When asked about the secrets of growing strawberries, Chen Lei said: "My family's strawberries first of all have a good variety; they are authentic Dandong 99 strawberries. Every year I personally go to Dandong, Haicheng and other places to select seedlings, to guarantee the quality of the seedlings. From the time they bloom, milk is sprayed once a week to ensure the strawberries are sweet and fragrant. I also installed beehives and a sulfur fumigator in the shed. The bees complete pollination, and the sulfur fumigator kills fungi, prevents pests and diseases, and prevents strawberry powdery mildew. This fumigator is completely pollution-free, avoiding the use of chemicals."
As we were talking, Chen Lei received a phone call from a customer. Chen Lei said: "Now my family's strawberries come with home delivery for purchases of 50 yuan or more. My family's strawberries have entered Shuangyan Supermarket and sell very well. During the Spring Festival, at the most expensive time, they sold for 30 yuan per jin, and in that one month I earned nearly 20,000 yuan."
