Bab u District in Hezhou, Guangxi, Polishes the Golden Signboard of a Century-Old Vegetable Hometown
A century-old vegetable hometown, spring colors fill the garden.
Hejie Town in Bab u District has long enjoyed the reputation of being a "millennium-old ancient town, century-old vegetable hometown." On March 18, the reporter came to Xinxingzhai in Hejie Town - the location of the Bab u District Modern Characteristic Agriculture (Core) Demonstration Park - and was pleasantly surprised to find that Hezhou City Feilong Ecological Park Co., Ltd. here had already begun to take shape, full of vitality, and impressive.
Rows upon rows of silvery-white vegetable greenhouses stand in the fields, particularly eye-catching; vegetable farmers are picking bright red tomatoes in the greenhouses, their faces beaming with the joy of harvest!
Traditional agriculture must innovate - put plainly, it needs a technological revolution in agriculture.
According to Tang Fei, general manager of Hezhou City Feilong Ecological Park Co., Ltd., the company has rented a total of 80 mu of land in Xinxingzhai, all using pollution-free methods to grow organic vegetables.
Tang Fei was originally a true-blue Hejie businessman. He shifted from non-farming to participating in modern agricultural production mainly because he wanted to innovate development concepts, use the "company + cooperative + farmer" model to set a benchmark for modern agriculture, polish the golden signboard of the "century-old vegetable hometown," and help local farmers realize their dreams of starting businesses and becoming prosperous right at their doorstep.
The efficiency of modern agriculture opened the reporter's eyes. The company originally used the traditional method of hiring workers to turn the soil, at 150 yuan per mu; now it hires agricultural machinery, and turning and ridging the soil is done in one pass, at 100 yuan per mu, saving time, labor, and money. Advanced drip irrigation technology is used to water the vegetables, saving water and labor, with remarkable economic benefits. In the second half of last year alone, the company achieved a profit of more than 200,000 yuan.
While making money itself, the company also helps local farmers make money. During busy farming seasons, the company hires more than 20 farmers from Xinxingzhai to work at their doorstep, each earning more than 2,000 yuan per month. The diligent Xinxingzhai farmer Huang Jiaquan can receive a monthly wage of 3,000 yuan, grinning from ear to ear.
"Seeing the ecological park produce vegetables for outside sales every day, and seeing that I can help local farmers earn money at their doorstep every day, I feel very happy," said General Manager Tang Fei.
With quality and reputation, customers naturally come. Before this year's Spring Festival, a large supermarket in Guangzhou came to Tang Fei to place an order, asking to order 10,000 jin of organic vegetables a day. With orders but insufficient production, what was to be done?
Only by carrying out an agricultural revolution boldly and dramatically, making the enterprise bigger and the scale larger, is there a way out. The company decisively decided to rent land in Xianghua Village, Hejie Town, to expand the modern characteristic agricultural science and technology demonstration park by 50 mu.
At the site of the company's newly expanded demonstration park, the reporter saw that some workers were busy building vegetable greenhouses, while others were installing newly introduced water-and-fertilizer drip irrigation pipes from the United States in the greenhouses. It is said that this water-and-fertilizer drip irrigation system is more advanced than that of the Xinxingzhai Ecological Park, and can drip-irrigate 25 mu per hour. It saves both water and fertilizer, and labor costs can be reduced by 50% to 70%.
Modern agriculture has great prospects and endless charm! General Manager Tang Fei vividly compared it: "The seeds of hope for prosperity have already been sown, and the expanded demonstration park will soon plant 50 mu of high-quality oil eggplant. Conservatively estimated, at normal output, 8,000 jin of oil eggplant can be produced per day. Calculated at 1 yuan per jin, this demonstration park alone can generate 8,000 yuan in income per day." He believes that by then, the golden signboard of the "century-old vegetable hometown" will shine even brighter!
