Black pig farming paves a new road to higher income and prosperity
When people mention Wang Haiying, the top black pig farmer in Daishan Village, Gucheng Town, many are impressed by her tenacious willpower. From earning her first pot of gold in 2005, through several ups and downs, she now has an annual pig slaughter output of more than one thousand head. With sheer grit, Wang Haiying started from nothing and embarked on a road to prosperity built on scientific and large-scale farming.
Walking into Daishan Village, the black pig farming base at the village entrance can be seen from afar, where Wang Haiying is busy in the pig pens. This rural woman, who only completed the fourth grade of primary school, has become Gucheng's most capable woman in achieving prosperity. Before raising pigs, Wang Haiying tried many jobs one after another, but none fulfilled her dream of getting rich. After many setbacks, a chance opportunity led her to learn that the black pig market in Gucheng had great potential, and she resolutely decided to develop her own black pig farming business in her hometown. Just after the New Year in 2005, she rented a 350 sq m site and used all her savings to buy 6 sows and a batch of piglets. Through her own efforts, she achieved a net income of 60,000 yuan that year.
The following year, having had her first taste of success, Wang Haiying bought 20 sows and 100 piglets, ready to go all out. However, a sudden outbreak of swine high fever dealt a severe blow to Wang Haiying's black pig farming. The 112 black pigs in the pens waiting to be sold died one after another, and 4 sows about to give birth also met the same fate, causing direct economic losses of nearly 200,000 yuan. The sudden misfortune did not crush her; instead, it strengthened her determination to continue raising pigs. With the coordination of the village party secretary, Wang Haiying obtained a 100,000 yuan loan from a rural microcredit program and, under the doubtful gazes of those around her, set foot on the pig farming path once again. This time, she learned from the lesson that focusing only on management while neglecting prevention had led to economic losses. While strengthening her studies, she carefully observed the habits of the pigs and accumulated knowledge on prevention and control. Wang Haiying's black pig farming gradually got on track, and her business flourished day by day. Today, nearly one thousand black pigs are slaughtered each year.
With her business thriving, Wang Haiying did not stop moving forward. Starting last year, she set her farming sights on the poultry industry, contracting a site at the Daishan Lake Forestry Farm to try three-dimensional farming, using the hillsides to graze goats and raising chickens, ducks, geese and other poultry in the low-lying valley areas, once again giving wings to her "farming dream."
