The latest news from the Ministry of Agriculture shows that starting this year, China will extend the Yangtze River fishing ban period, from the previous 3 months to 4 months, and will expand the ban area to cover the Yangtze River main stream and important lakes.
Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu pointed out that in addition to extending the Yangtze fishing ban by one month, it is also necessary to greatly reduce fishing intensity, vigorously promote the transfer of fishermen to other industries and occupations, and take the lead in achieving a full fishing ban in aquatic life protection zones in the Yangtze River basin; strengthen the construction of Yangtze aquatic life protection zones, and implement the Chinese sturgeon rescue action plan and the finless porpoise protection action plan.
Han Changfu pointed out that starting this year, a 3-month "Clear the Lakes Action" will be carried out in Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake, severely cracking down on illegal fishing activities such as "electric shock, poisoning and explosives"; concentrating on rectifying serious harmful practices such as illegal fishing, "root-and-branch nets", illegal sand mining and illegal sewage discharge; and continuing to organize various localities to widely carry out aquatic life proliferation and release activities, persistently promoting the recovery of Yangtze aquatic biological resources and the restoration of the water ecological environment.
It is reported that the Yangtze River is an important ecological treasure house in China, with more than 1,100 species of aquatic life, but due to the impact of water conservancy projects, water pollution and overfishing, the living environment of Yangtze aquatic life has been deteriorating day by day, the biodiversity index has continued to decline, and in particular rare and endemic species have comprehensively declined, with some species on the brink of extinction.
