On May 12, Wang Sujian measures blood pressure for a local resident.

Wang Sujian, born in 1992, graduated from Harbin Medical University. Responding to Heilongjiang Province's "Township Health Center Medical Staff Supplement Plan," he came to Hutou Town Central Health Center in Hulin County in 2014 and became a college-graduate village doctor. Hutou Town faces Iman, Russia across the river and has only 13,000 permanent residents. With the medical knowledge he learned, Wang Sujian guards the first "health gate" for the local villagers.

Heilongjiang Province's "Township Health Center Medical Staff Supplement Plan" was launched in 2014, openly recruiting 3,000 people from higher medical colleges inside and outside the province and from society, to be allocated to 944 township health centers across the province. Wang Sujian is one of them.

Wang Sujian usually lives at the health center, busy every day entering local residents' health records, making home visits to villagers for physical examinations and publicizing common knowledge about disease prevention and epidemic control. "This young man is both a doctor and a nurse, and occasionally also acts as a cashier. Nursing, using a computer to issue invoices, dispensing and preparing medicine, debridement, suturing - he needs to master all of these," said Li Cuiqin, a doctor at Hutou Town Central Health Center.

Coming from a bustling big city to the town, and being separated from his family and girlfriend, has brought some inconvenience to Wang Sujian's life, but Wang Sujian said: "In this line of work as a village doctor, there are no expert consultations and no rescue command. There is only quietly busying oneself to protect the health of the town's residents. This is my responsibility as a village doctor."
