The ma bamboo shoots (Dendrocalamus latiflorus) produced in Putian Town, Jiedong District, are a well-known specialty of the eastern Guangdong region. Due to climate reasons, this year's Putian bamboo shoots came to market one month later than usual. Although the newly listed bamboo shoots are priced considerably higher than in previous years, they are still highly sought after by consumers.

Putian Town is located in the central part of Jiedong District. With abundant sunshine, a mild and humid climate, and ample rainfall, it is especially suitable for growing tropical plants such as ma bamboo shoots. The bamboo shoot variety grown in Putian is the ma bamboo shoot. Bamboo shoot farmers generally clear the grove and loosen the soil in the period after the Winter Solstice and before the Spring Festival, and begin earthing up and fertilizing after the Lantern Festival. The growing environment for bamboo shoots must be "high temperature and high humidity." The heat of the weather and the amount of rainfall both have a major impact on bamboo shoots. In previous years, Putian bamboo shoots began to be harvested after Qingming, and the peak production period ran from after the Dragon Boat Festival to the Mid-Autumn Festival. This year's high temperatures came relatively late, affecting the town's bamboo shoot production, so that this year's bamboo shoots came to market one month later than usual.

Recently, in the bamboo grove of Xinan Mountain Village in Putian Town, a reporter saw that on the soil surface of the lush green grove there were many bamboo shoots already poking out their tips. Bamboo shoot farmer Chen Danhui, who has more than 20 mu of bamboo grove, was carefully inspecting the bamboo shoots, judging their ripeness by experience: those that were ripe he dug out, and those that were not he covered with soil to let them keep growing. Bamboo shoots from the early production season are generally not large, each weighing only 2 to 3 jin. According to Chen Danhui, this year's shoot season is later than usual, while the price is almost double that of previous years. The current market retail price is about 10 yuan per jin, and the bamboo shoots produced daily from his grove cannot meet demand. (Reported by the Jieyang Daily)
