Cangzhou-born Farmer Uncle Dong Teaches Nankai Students to Farm
On May 27, the Nankai University Gongneng Agricultural Experience Garden, located at the southeast corner of the Jinnan New Campus, welcomed a special guest - Cangzhou-born farmer Uncle Dong. Uncle Dong farms around the school and has rich planting experience. This time he was invited specifically to explain agricultural planting techniques to the teachers and student team members of the Gongneng Agricultural Experience Garden.
Uncle Dong explained basic crop cultivation methods and simple symptoms of plant pests and diseases; trained team members in the ability to use basic production labor tools (such as hoes and shovels); and provided training on a series of field management tasks including turning the soil, preparing the land, sowing, transplanting, watering, weeding, and fertilizing. Based on the specific conditions of each responsible plot, Uncle Dong gave guidance one by one: whether planting was too dense, how to judge the degree of watering, how to set up trellises for melon vines, pest and weed removal for fennel and radish, irrigation methods, and transplanting of seedlings.
During this process, Uncle Dong exchanged thoughts with the students, hoping they would love labor, love the land, put in effort, and shed sweat. Afterwards, all team members worked together under Uncle Dong's guidance: setting up trellises and removing pests and weeds for tomatoes, transplanting peanut seedlings, and loosening the soil for sunflowers.
After the activity, the team members responded enthusiastically. On the one hand, they thanked Uncle Dong for his plain and patient guidance; on the other hand, they also said they cherished this platform, where different farming team members could cooperate deeply, promoting teacher-student integration and peer exchange. As Student Li, a teammate from "Zheng Zai Zhong Di," said: previously "I had only looked up some dogmatic knowledge online, but today after Uncle Dong's explanation and exchanges with other teammates, I understood that some knowledge must be combined with practice, otherwise mistakes will be made."
It is reported that this activity is one of the follow-up activities of the Gongneng Agricultural Experience Garden and also a preliminary attempt at building a field practice education course. The organizers carefully arranged it so that practical activities could be passed on systematically. After the garden opening ceremony, teachers and students were full of enthusiasm, usually using class breaks or time before the end of school to care for the plants, arranging duty shifts to take turns watering, fertilizing, and weeding. Based on the actual planting situation, the organizers will gradually launch various training sessions to provide practical guidance for students and teachers. (Nankai News correspondent Chen Chang)
