Yellow cherries are not necessarily unripe! Do you know the four secrets for eating cherries?

CCTV Finance ("Consumer Advocacy")Bailuyuan is not just a famous novel and golden wheat fields; "agate red on Bailuyuan" refers to another famous local product: cherries.

Bailuyuan's cherries are said to come in more than 30 varieties. In the harvest season, the whole of Bailuyuan is covered with agate-like fruit hanging from the branches, a sweep of red and yellow.

This year Bailuyuan's cherries had a bumper harvest, but for cherry growers, a bumper harvest also brings its own troubles. Output went up, but prices went downhill.

One grower told a "Consumer Advocacy" reporter that in 2015 he earned around 100,000 yuan from selling cherries, and in 2016, although output rose, total income at most only matched 2015.

The "Pioneer" in the picking orchards

Xizhangpo Village is located on the north slope of Bailuyuan, and this is the main cherry-producing area. In recent years, more and more tourists have come here for picking, and one spot is even named "Cherry Valley." Every May, a cherry festival is held here, and on weekends, all six roads to Bailuyuan are packed with cars.

One picker told the reporter that to enter the orchard and pick, each person pays a 20 yuan admission fee and can eat as much as they like once inside. For cherries you pick yourself and take away, regardless of variety, the price is uniformly 10 yuan per jin. Clearly, this price is much cheaper than buying at wholesale markets or supermarkets!

The cherries at farm households are not only low in price, but also very fresh, and quality is guaranteed. The owner of one orchard told a "Consumer Advocacy" reporter that they mainly grow a cherry variety called Pioneer; Pioneer cherries have short fruit stems and are somewhat larger than other cherry varieties.

Red Light and Big Purple: how to tell them apart?

Sister Zhu's cherry orchard has four varieties: Red Light, Big Purple, Soft Yellow and Yellow Jade.

Red Light and Big Purple look fairly similar in appearance, with a price difference of a few yuan. Red Light cherries are plump and round, and Big Purple, when not quite ripe, also has a red surface, making it easy to confuse with Red Light.

How do you distinguish Red Light from Big Purple? Very simple: look mainly at the fruit stem.

Are yellow cherries unripe?

The other two varieties in Sister Zhu's orchard, Soft Yellow and Yellow Jade, are close in price, both around 8 yuan per jin.

Many customers mistakenly think yellow cherries are cheap because they are unripe, which is why their color is yellow. In fact, that is not the case; judging by sweetness alone, yellow cherries are sweeter than Red Light and Big Purple. It is just that Soft Yellow and Yellow Jade cherries, because they are relatively juicy, crack easily and do not store well, so their price is a bit lower.

A cherry grower told a "Consumer Advocacy" reporter that when picking cherries, pay attention: "Be sure to pick them with the stem, not by pinching them off with your fingernail. Cherries picked with the stem keep well and can be stored for a week."

When choosing cherries, refer to these points

The freshness life of cherries is generally one week. After picking, they do not need to be put in the refrigerator; once refrigerated, cherries taste milder. Just put them in a cool, ventilated place and wash only as many as you eat.

Although cherries are good, you should not eat too many. Cherries are high in potassium, and kidney disease patients who eat too many may easily develop hyperkalemia; cherries are warm and hot in nature, so people with ulcers or symptoms of internal heat should eat them cautiously.
