Five years of careful management turns 500 mu of barren mountain land on Shengjiling into an orchard

Five years ago, in a barren stretch amid towering mountains, he spent a fortune to open up wasteland and plant fruit trees, and some people said he was foolish; he led his family to set aside their relatively stable business and income and return to the high mountains to run an orchard that would show no returns for three to five years, and again some people said he could not see clearly.

The story unfolds around Tang Fujin of Changshou Village, Qiaozi Township.

Tang Fujin is a capable man in the area. In his early years he worked away from home, and later ran barbershops in Qiaozi, Baojia and other places. In recent years, Pengshui's agricultural industry has developed rapidly, and he saw hope in it, so he decided to start a business again and move into the agricultural industry.

Five years ago, by a chance opportunity, Tang Fujin once again entrusted the rest of his life to the land that gave him life and raised him.

In 2010, due to lack of experience and drought, all the honeysuckle he planted dried up and died. Tang Fujin summed up the reasons and decided to start over from the beginning. In 2011, after choosing a site and seeking help from experts, Tang Fujin signed a transfer agreement with farmers, led his family and villagers to reclaim wasteland on Shengjiling Mountain, and based on the soil characteristics and comparisons of various fruit trees planted, planted 28,000 walnut saplings on 500 mu of barren mountain land, planning to spend several years turning this place into a Huaguoshan famous far and wide.

Building roads and deep-plowing the land, they pressed on and finished it all in one go. The former barren mountain became large stretches of fertile plots, carrying Tang Fujin's efforts to become prosperous.

Tang Fujin realized that a single type of fruit would be unfavorable for future development, so he successively purchased pear trees, peach trees, plum trees and others. Besides fruit, he also planted flowers such as Chinese roses.

After several years of polishing, Tang Fujin built his dream on the barren mountain and created an "upgraded version" of primitive agriculture: an original-ecology estate covering 500 mu has begun to take shape.

Recently, a reporter visited this orchard. Because high-mountain fruit has a long growing period, it misses the peak ripening period of fruit in plain areas, creating a very good time difference, which made Tang Fujin see the bright prospects of high-mountain fruit.

In pursuit of original ecology and no pollution, he set a rule: never use herbicides, insecticides or chemical fertilizers within his "territory." For this reason, each year's weeding alone costs him more than 100,000 yuan in labor.

After more than 5 years of unremitting effort, the barren mountain finally became an orchard.

At present, Tang Fujin has set his sights firmly on a mountain-area farmhouse leisure project that can compete on ecological environment and fresher air, because these are things city people find hard to "enjoy."

"The 'quiet life' and 'slow life' that city people yearn for can be fully satisfied here." Combining rural tourism and using the location advantage of the Taiji Water base, Tang Fujin will turn this place into a veritable Huaguoshan while planning to build a farmhouse leisure project. "The houses should use the style of Tujia stilted buildings, with both an antique flavor and a rustic flavor, creating a place that can provide local goods and also let visitors experience farming life and taste the unique mountain village scenery."
