"The Stropharia rugosoannulata I grow with discarded corn stalks is no worse in quality at all." Recently, in the greenhouse of the Stropharia rugosoannulata research and planting base of the Yurong Ecological Professional Cooperative in Sheqi County, Henan Province, chairman Wang Zhenquan was organizing workers to pick and box the brightly colored Stropharia rugosoannulata one by one.

How to turn stalks from waste into treasure has been a topic of much attention in recent years. After several years of research and practice, the Yurong Cooperative has achieved phased success in cultivating and growing Stropharia rugosoannulata with corn stalks. This not only found a new outlet for discarded stalks, but also found a new channel for increasing farmers' income.

Wang Zhenquan said that Stropharia rugosoannulata originally grows at the roots of red pine trees. After extensive research and experiments, the cooperative developed a new planting method, using corn stalks plus soil for cultivation. Introduction and trial planting proved that Stropharia rugosoannulata grown with corn stalks as the main planting material and paired with appropriate auxiliary materials has large caps, bright color, tender flesh, and a delicate, pleasant aroma, with quality not inferior to wild ones. Moreover, this planting model can both recycle and utilize stalks in large quantities, protect the ecological environment, and effectively increase farmers' income.

"In Sheqi, our cooperative is still the first to successfully cultivate Stropharia rugosoannulata." Wang Zhenquan said that growing Stropharia rugosoannulata with corn stalks has low cost and simple procedures, requiring nothing more than fungus bags, stalks, humus soil, farmyard manure, and so on. As long as water and temperature are monitored, five or six harvests can be obtained in 3 months. In addition, because of its high nutritional value and good taste, selling it is not a problem at all, and it is in short supply in the local market.

"We currently have more than 50 mu of research and planting base, with a yield of 3000 to 5000 jin per mu and an annual economic benefit of 8000 to 10000 yuan per mu. Next, the cooperative plans to promote the planting of 500 mu of Stropharia rugosoannulata, which can consume 5 million jin of corn stalks annually, so that more farmers can benefit as well."
