Polygonum multiflorum planting helps farmers open the door to prosperity
In early summer June, a reporter walked into Yangfeng Village, Yinhu Community, Liuzhi Special District, and was greeted by Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu) growing vigorously across the hillsides, with dozens of farmers busy spraying pesticide on the Polygonum multiflorum seedlings... This is the Polygonum multiflorum planting base that the community built through a company brought in by investment promotion last year.
In recent years, Yinhu Community has followed the model of "government guidance, corporate investment, enterprise operation, and industrialized development," vigorously bringing in enterprises to develop specialty planting and lead farmers to increase income and prosper.
It is understood that Guihe Agricultural Development Co., Ltd., brought in by Yinhu Community, has now planted Polygonum multiflorum in Yangfeng Village on a scale of 1,200 mu, with 81 poor households joining the company's development through land transfer. Each mu of land can bring a guaranteed annual dividend of 300 yuan; in addition, these poor households can have priority for work at the base.
"From May to October is the busy farming season at the base, and more than 40 labor positions can be provided every day. Depending on the division of labor, workers at the base can earn 80 to 150 yuan per day in labor income," said Liang Peng, project manager of Guihe Company.
"My family transferred 7 mu of land to the company and can get a guaranteed annual dividend of more than 2,000 yuan. Working at the company also brings 80 yuan a day, much more worthwhile than farming the land ourselves before," said Wang Zhengqin, a villager from Wanshan Group in Yangfeng Village who was working at the base, happily.
"Polygonum multiflorum is also known as wild seedling, snake grass, and so on. It likes high temperature and high humidity and grows on mountains above 1,000 m in altitude. It has functions such as tonifying essence and blood, darkening beard and hair, strengthening sinews and bones, and tonifying the liver and kidneys. It is a common Chinese herbal medicine with diverse functions," Liang Peng introduced. The root of Polygonum multiflorum is a precious Chinese medicinal material, the leaves can be made into Polygonum multiflorum dishes and processed into Polygonum multiflorum tea, and the leftover bits can be supplied to nearby farms as feed. The farms then provide livestock manure as fertilizer to the Polygonum multiflorum base, achieving circular utilization.
Liang Peng told the reporter that in order to give full play to the economic value of Polygonum multiflorum, whose "whole plant is a treasure," the company introduced a production line for making Polygonum multiflorum tea, which can produce about 500 jin of Polygonum multiflorum tea per day. At the same time, the company also introduced processing techniques for making Polygonum multiflorum dishes. In the production workshop, the reporter saw that more than a dozen barrels of Polygonum multiflorum dishes were fermenting, with a faint Chinese medicinal smell drifting in the air. "We have applied for a trademark for the Polygonum multiflorum dishes we make, and the trademark application for Polygonum multiflorum tea is also underway. These products are sold far beyond the province and are widely praised."
"Next, we will guide the surrounding ordinary people to plant Polygonum multiflorum themselves, with the company providing free technical guidance and buying it back at market prices." Liang Peng calculated an account for the reporter: "If farmers grow traditional crops, the income per mu is between 600 and 800 yuan. After deducting fertilizer, pesticide, and labor, little is left. If they switch to planting Polygonum multiflorum, with one harvest every 3 years, the income per mu can reach 12,000 to 14,000 yuan, averaging more than 4,000 yuan per mu per year."
It is understood that after the 1,200 mu of Polygonum multiflorum is harvested 3 years later, Guihe Company will take out 5 to 10% of its profits to provide support funds free of charge to the 193 poor households in Yangfeng Village, leading everyone to prosper together.
