Zhangqiu, Shandong: A "Salvia miltiorrhiza youth" emerges in the village

Report from our newspaper: Recently, in Beisun Village, Puji Subdistrict, Zhangqiu City, Shandong Province, a "Salvia miltiorrhiza youth" has emerged——Sun Hui, a college graduate who returned home to start a business and is leading fellow villagers to develop Chinese medicinal herbs and prosper. It turns out that in order to lead the masses out of poverty and toward prosperity, Zhangqiu City proposed developing the Chinese medicinal herb industry according to local conditions. Sun Hui, a 23-year-old college student, chose to return to his hometown to start a business after graduating from university in July last year, and formed an indissoluble bond with Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Responding to the local need to develop the Chinese medicinal herb industry for poverty alleviation, Sun Hui discovered new business opportunities——Chinese herbal health products and Chinese herbal cosmetics. With the support of the village Party branch and village committee, he joined with villagers to establish a planting professional cooperative, attracting 28 poor households to participate in Salvia miltiorrhiza cultivation through land equity, embarking on a path of industrialized and large-scale development. Today, the Salvia miltiorrhiza planting area in Beisun Village has reached more than 400 mu, with income per mu exceeding 3,000 yuan. At present, the cooperative has radiated outward to drive Salvia miltiorrhiza cultivation in more than 10 surrounding villages, totaling 1,800 mu. The total Chinese medicinal herb planting area in all of Zhangqiu City has reached 23,000 mu, and it is expected that income per mu of land will increase by 1,500 yuan.
