Fruit cucumber bred by Shanghai Jiao Tong University reaches an annual yield of 16,000 kg per mu

It is learned that the research group led by Cai Run, professor in the Department of Plant Science, School of Agriculture and Biology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, overcame difficulties over more than 10 years, collected more than 800 varieties from home and abroad, and finally bred a new "fruit cucumber" variety with independent intellectual property rights suitable for cultivation across China, adding a touch of green to ordinary people's dining tables.

The research group introduced and collected more than 800 accessions of fruit cucumber materials from abroad and domestic cucumber resources. After more than ten consecutive years of effort, through cross-breeding combination experiments combined with molecular marker-assisted breeding, they pyramided various excellent traits and finally bred a new fruit cucumber variety with independent intellectual property rights suitable for cultivation across China.

The research group closely combined conventional cross-breeding with molecular marker-assisted breeding technology, took the lead in building a cucumber molecular marker breeding technology system in China, and cultivated 6 "Shenlv" series fruit cucumber varieties specifically for greenhouses. The "Shenlv" series fruit cucumbers reach an annual yield of 16,000 kg per mu, with a marketable cucumber rate of about 95%.

According to the introduction, during 2012-2015, this new cucumber variety was trial-planted and promoted in **, Sichuan, Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Yunnan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shanghai and other places. Due to outstanding resistance, quality and yield, it was widely praised by farmers, with a cumulative planting area of 301,000 mu-times and an output value of 2 billion yuan.
