Comprehensive report by Sannong Zhitongche: Huang Jintang, 64, is a villager of Wunihu Village, Shiba Town, Boluo County. Every day he busies himself with the more than 10,000 Sanhuang bearded chickens at his home. He was once an impoverished household, and now he is brewing a big plan -- to double the stock of more than 10,000 birds.
Wunihu Village is a model in the second round of the city's "Pairing Assistance" poverty alleviation and development work. The village implemented targeted poverty alleviation, and through farming and breeding assistance, achieved over 3 years the complete escape from poverty of all impoverished households and an 11-fold increase in village collective economic income.
46 impoverished households escaped poverty by raising chickens
Huang Jintang may be a large-scale farmer now, but 3 years ago, his family of 6 lived on 4 mu of land and odd jobs in the slack farming season, with an annual household income of just over 10,000 yuan and a per capita income of only just over 2,000 yuan.
Huang Jintang told reporters that at present his family has about 11,000 chickens in stock, producing two and a half batches a year. If the stock reaches 20,000 birds, that means 40,000 to 50,000 chickens a year. Through raising chickens, his family's annual income has reached 50,000 to 60,000 yuan, and they have now built a house.
"This is thanks to the assisting unit, the Municipal Real Estate Administration Bureau, which has enabled the village's impoverished households to escape poverty and grow rich by raising chickens," said Huang Wenhui, Party branch secretary and village committee director of Wunihu Village. To help impoverished households escape poverty as quickly as possible, under the guidance of the assisting unit, the village used the chick and technical resources of the village's provincial-level leading chicken farming enterprise, Siyuan Breeding Co., Ltd., and through the "company + base + farming households" model, focused on implementing farming and breeding assistance for impoverished households.
"We provide chicks to impoverished households with no deposit, and every year technicians come to their doors free of charge to train them in techniques," introduced Huang Wenxiang, chairman of Siyuan Breeding Co., Ltd. In the second round of the "Pairing Assistance" poverty alleviation and development work, the company led 46 impoverished households in raising Sanhuang bearded chickens. At present, the villagers who have escaped poverty have a total stock of about 200,000-plus birds, with annual profits of around 2 million yuan.
"The Sanhuang bearded chicken is one of Guangdong's three famous chicken breeds, with good market sales and high returns," introduced Jian Miaosen, a village-assigned cadre from the Municipal Real Estate Administration Bureau. The assisting unit, following the assistance approach of "basing itself on agricultural realities, using existing resources, and growing steadily year by year," developed the chicken farming industry and encouraged impoverished households to raise Sanhuang bearded chickens.
Village collective annual income grows from 25,000 to 310,000 yuan
In addition to developing Sanhuang bearded chicken farming among impoverished households so that they could escape poverty through their own efforts, the assisting unit also helped another 29 relatively poor households in the village escape poverty through dilapidated-house renovation, relief assistance, vocational skills training and other means.
"Over 3 years, total investment of funds at all levels and of all kinds in Wunihu Village has reached 16.59 million yuan," introduced Jian Miaosen. Through 3 years of assistance, the per capita annual income of impoverished households in Wunihu Village grew from 2,923 yuan in 2012 to 11,783 yuan, and the village collective economic annual income grew from the original 25,000 yuan to 310,000 yuan.
While the villagers' wallets have grown fuller, the village environment has also undergone tremendous changes with the help of the assisting unit. Today, walking into Wunihu Village is like stepping into a modern pastoral painting: the spacious and clean village roads, the boundless farmland, the cultural square with complete facilities, and the neatly arranged small Western-style houses all tell people that this village has completed its transformation.
