Huang Zunyi: A leader in helping farmers get rich

In June, melons and fruits are fragrant. Recently, reporters walked into the Huaibei Hongshuo Horticulture Farmers' Professional Cooperative. Looking out, the greenhouses were all green, and the melons, fruits, and vegetables were growing delightfully. "These greenhouses are not only the 'money trees' for us farmers in Shitai Village to get rich, but also the best witness to agricultural efficiency and farmers' income growth." Looking at the melons, fruits, and vegetables about to be harvested, cooperative leader Huang Zunyi was beaming with joy.

In the 1990s, the industrial structure of Shitai Village followed the traditional planting model of "one wheat, one soybean," and the annual per capita net income was around 1,000 yuan. In order to increase farmers' economic income, Huang Zunyi, then secretary of the Party branch of Shitai Village, wanted to break through the traditional planting model and explore a path to wealth by planting cash crops such as vegetables and fruits.

"At that time, everyone was afraid to try new planting models and varieties. Only by taking the lead in trial planting could I make the people believe it." In 2002, in order to trial-plant new grape varieties, Huang Zunyi introduced more than ten kinds of grapes from other places at prices ranging from 10 yuan to 200 yuan per plant for trial planting. "Only through trial planting can new varieties prove whether they are suitable for local promotion and planting. Only by letting the masses benefit can it be considered a success," Huang Zunyi said.

In 2006, Huang Zunyi stepped down from the position of village Party branch secretary. With a love for rural undertakings, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to adjusting the industrial structure. In order to industrialize planting, in 2007 he led the establishment of the Huaibei Hongshuo Farmers' Professional Cooperative, engaged in the planting of greenhouse melons, fruits, vegetables, and vegetables. For member farmers, the cooperative implemented unified seed purchasing, unified fertilizer, and unified technical guidance, and contacted sellers, reducing the risks of planting by individual households. In order to let urban residents eat fresh and inexpensive vegetables, fruits, and melons, the base built a new cold storage room capable of holding nearly more than 100 tons, making it more convenient to solve the storage difficulties of individual households and growers in the village, and ensuring that the melons, fruits, and vegetables grown remain "original in flavor."

Shitai Village villager Huang Deli was one of the first members to join the cooperative. Previously, Huang Deli had always worked elsewhere. Under Huang Zunyi's influence, in 2003 he returned to the village to start a business, transferred 60 mu of land to develop greenhouse vegetables. His Shanghai green bok choy, stringless kohlrabi, and others sold well in the Huaibei and Suzhou vegetable markets, with an annual net income of more than 200,000 yuan.

Today, the cooperative has more than 500 member households, among which more than 70 are relatively large in scale.

Through land transfer, Shitai Village now has more than 1,000 mu of early-spring snow peaches, more than 30 mu of greenhouse grapes, and more than 400 mu of a fruit and vegetable science and technology park. In 2011, the park was designated a "National Vegetable Standard Park." Farmers in Shitai Village have embarked on the road to prosperity by planting greenhouse melons, fruits, and vegetables, with an annual per capita net income of more than 10,000 yuan.

Huang Zunyi, a retired village cadre, demonstrated the style of a Communist Party member through his practical actions. "In order to let more villagers embark on the road to prosperity, I am willing to use the base and give play to my remaining heat, so that my elders and fellow villagers can live happy lives by relying on scientific farming," Huang Zunyi said full of confidence.
