Sanhuang bearded chicken farming fattens villagers' wallets
Huang Jintang, 64, is a villager of Wunihu Village, Shiba Town, Boluo County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province. Every day he busies himself with the more than 10,000 Sanhuang bearded chickens his family keeps. He was once a poor household, and now he is hatching a big plan——to double the stock of more than 10,000 birds.
Wunihu Village is a model in Huizhou City's second round of the "two arrivals" poverty alleviation and development work. The village carried out targeted poverty alleviation, and through crop-and-livestock poverty alleviation, it achieved the great changes of lifting all poor households out of poverty within 3 years and increasing the village's collective economic income 11-fold.
Though Huang Jintang is now a large-scale breeder, 3 years ago his family of 6 lived on 4 mu of land and odd jobs in the slack farming season, with an annual household income of just over 10,000 yuan and a per capita income of only over 2,000 yuan.
Huang Jintang told this writer that at present his family has a stock of about 11,000 chickens, with nearly 30,000 marketed in a year. If the stock reaches 20,000, they would have 40,000 to 50,000 chickens a year. Through raising chickens, his family's annual income has reached 50,000 to 60,000 yuan, and they have now built a multi-storey house.
"We must thank the assisting unit, the Huizhou Municipal Real Estate Administration Bureau, for enabling the village's poor households to shake off poverty and become rich by raising chickens." Huang Wenhui, Party branch secretary and village committee director of Wunihu Village, said that to help poor households escape poverty as soon as possible, under the guidance of the assisting unit, the village used the chick and technical resources of Siyuan Breeding Co., Ltd., a provincial-level leading chicken-raising enterprise in the village, and through the "company + base + farmer" model, focused on carrying out crop-and-livestock poverty alleviation for poor households.
"We provide chicks to poor households with no deposit, and every year technicians also come to their doors to train them in techniques free of charge." Huang Wenxiang, chairman of Siyuan Breeding Co., Ltd., introduced that in the second round of the "two arrivals" poverty alleviation and development work, the company led 46 poor households in raising Sanhuang bearded chickens. The villagers who have now escaped poverty keep a stock of about more than 200,000 birds, with annual profits of around 2 million yuan.
"The Sanhuang bearded chicken is one of Guangdong's three famous chickens, with good market sales and high returns." Jian Miaosen, a village-stationed cadre of the Huizhou Municipal Real Estate Administration Bureau, introduced that the assisting unit, following the assistance approach of "basing itself on agricultural realities, using existing resources, and growing steadily year by year," developed the chicken-raising industry and encouraged poor households to raise Sanhuang bearded chickens.
