Zhoukou man becomes rich through entrepreneurship after prison release, annual profit 600,000 yuan

On the afternoon of July 25, in the “Wanli Vineyard” of Zhaolou Village, Minglu Office, Luyi County, Zhoukou, working villagers were picking grapes for customers. From the initial 10 mu of vegetable fields to today's base with 120 mu of vineyard, entrepreneur Zhao Wanli said that in addition to his own hard work, he owes much to the help of the government and society.

In the summer of 1994, Zhao Wanli was imprisoned for stealing two Santana sedans and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In prison, Zhao Wanli actively reformed through labor after receiving education, received two sentence reductions, and was released in 2006. “At that time the family was poor, and in a moment of greed he stole cars, which brought suffering to me and our two young children. But I understand that Wanli is kind by nature, and he only went astray for the sake of the children and me. I believed he could change for the better, so I gritted my teeth and, despite pressure from my parents' family, did not remarry.” said Zhao Wanli's wife, Li Caiying.

After his release, Zhao Wanli returned to the village. The elders and neighbors did not cold-shoulder him, and all offered ideas for Zhao Wanli to do a small business. However, Zhao Wanli was not one to do things half-heartedly; if he was going to do it, he was going to do it properly. He asked his son to submit a report on his behalf to the village committee to contract 10 mu of land, build greenhouses and grow organic vegetables. At that time, he used biogas residue and chicken and cow manure as fertilizer, insisted on not using pesticides on the vegetables, and used sprayed biogas slurry residue to treat pest damage. In 3 years, he fully repaid the 200,000 yuan loan he had invested.

In 2010, based on Zhao Wanli's situation, the Luyi County Justice Bureau, Public Security Bureau and the local village committee supported him in contracting 120 mu of land and encouraged him to go all out. With the help of his son and daughter, who had graduated from university, Zhao Wanli decided to introduce and plant 110 mu of high-quality grapes. Through scientific management and careful cultivation, in 3 years Zhao Wanli basically recovered his costs.

This year, Zhao Wanli's grapes had a bumper harvest. After deducting costs, loan interest and labor input, he expects to earn a net 600,000 yuan.

“Zhao Wanli has reformed very well. After being released from prison, he did not give up on himself, but became an outstanding cultivation entrepreneur. This is worth summarizing and promoting by the judicial system.” said Li Wendong, secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of the Luyi County Public Security Bureau and former detention center director.
