A grower in Wanjia Town, Dachuan District, Dazhou City, Sichuan, grew a giant watermelon weighing over 100 jin, with a diameter exceeding 50 cm; because the giant watermelon contains no sugar, it is generally not eaten. So what is this kind of watermelon used for?

“Such a big watermelon is really scary. Can it be eaten?” Recently, Mr. Sun, a resident, went to Wanjia Town, Dachuan District, Dazhou City, Sichuan, on business and happened to discover that a grower there had grown a giant watermelon weighing over 100 jin. After Mr. Sun forwarded the giant watermelon to his WeChat Moments, it immediately sparked heated discussion among netizens. It is understood that the grower who grew the giant watermelon is named Chen Jianbing. The watermelon weighs 103 jin, and its diameter exceeds 50 cm; because the giant watermelon contains no sugar, it is generally not eaten and is mainly used for viewing and carving.

According to Mr. Sun, he recently went to Wanjia Town, Dachuan District, on business and happened to discover Chen Jianbing's giant watermelon. “Although I had heard about this kind of giant watermelon in the news before, it was the first time I saw one with my own eyes,” Mr. Sun said.

Later, a reporter from Sichuan News Network contacted the watermelon's owner, Chen Jianbing, by phone. According to the introduction, in 2010 Chen Jianbing came to Wanjia Town, Dachuan District, from Zhejiang and rented land to engage in watermelon cultivation. “I now grow 50 mu of watermelons, with an annual output of more than 400,000 jin.” In November 2015, while studying elsewhere, Chen Jianbing saw a promotional material saying that it could produce large watermelons. Out of curiosity, he bought seeds and took them back to Dazhou for trial planting.

“The seeds were probably sown in February, and they grew out in June. At the time I was just giving it a try, and I didn't expect it to succeed.” Chen Jianbing said that at the time he found 4 people, and only by wrapping the watermelon in cloth were they able to carry it back from the field.

It is understood that giant watermelons are mainly used for viewing and carving and are generally not eaten. Chen Jianbing told a reporter from Sichuan News Network that he plans to improve his techniques next year and grow larger and heavier watermelons.
