Gu Xinliang, a 56-year-old teacher in Heimiao Village, Baimiao Township, Jiaxian County, Pingdingshan, inadvertently "wrote" calligraphy and paintings on the watermelons sold at his home, opening up the market for "watermelons that are hard to sell,"in 11 days, the more than 6,000 jin of early-maturing watermelons grown on his more than one mu of land were all sold under his "brushwork," and along with them nearly 2,000 jin of melons from half a mu were also almost sold out.
"I myself didn't expect it either. That day I inadvertently wrote 'fu' and 'shou' on two watermelons respectively, and they sold very quickly." On the morning of August 1, when talking about his act of writing and painting on watermelons, Gu Xinliang's face was full of excitement.
Watermelons with characters sold well, which immediately got Gu Xinliang busy working on watermelons again. He carved onto the watermelons at his melon stall respectivelywords such as "happiness," "bringing in wealth and treasure," "good luck and happiness," and "gold pouring in daily." These watermelons also quickly attracted passersby passing by the melon stall, and all these watermelons with characters were purchased.
Gu Xinliang said that he had especially loved calligraphy since childhood, but because there were many brothers and sisters in the family, there was simply no money to buy calligraphy copybooks. To this day, his calligraphy foundation comes entirely from the calligraphy knowledge he learned at school during primary and middle school. Because his family is in the countryside and farm work is busy, he simply has no time to practice or exchange ideas with calligraphy teachers. He only voluntarily writes couplets for fellow villagers in the same village or surrounding villagers during festivals and holidays. Gu Xinliang also jokingly calls his calligraphy "a school of its own."
