Mass fish deaths at Sanya Bay caused by fishermen using illegal bottom trawls, leading to nets spilling their catch

On August 11, the Publicity Department of the Sanya Municipal Party Committee held an overnight media briefing to report on the preliminary investigation into the dead fish on the beach at Sanya Bay. Investigation found that on August 10, the large number of dead fish appearing at Sanya Bay was caused by fishermen using illegal bottom trawls, which led to the nets spilling their catch. At present, those involved have been detained by police.

On August 11, at the briefing, Zhang Huazhong, director of the Sanya Ocean and Fisheries Bureau, reported to the media the "preliminary investigation results of the dead fish on the beach at Sanya Bay." It is understood that this matter received great attention from the Sanya Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, which instructed the ocean department to investigate and gather evidence with the cooperation of relevant departments. After investigation and evidence gathering, it has been confirmed that this matter occurred when fishermen illegally used bottom trawls to fish, and the nets ruptured, causing a large number of sea fish to spill out.

On August 10, a large number of dead fish appeared on a 600-meter stretch of beach at Xianjufu in Sanya Bay. Through investigation and evidence gathering, public security authorities learned that at about 9 p.m. on August 9, Pu, a fisherman from Huihui Village, Tianya District, Sanya City, operated a fishing boat and gathered more than 50 people to fish in the waters of Sanya Bay using bottom trawls. By about 2 a.m. on August 10, Pu and others began hauling in the nets. Because the wind was strong and the waves rough at the time, the catch was relatively large, and the nearby seabed slope was steep, the fishing net ruptured, causing about 10,000 jin of fish to spill onto the nearshore beach. Pu and others collected the relatively large fish on the spot, while smaller fish such as greenback mullet, anchovy, and small anchovy were directly abandoned.

At present, in response to this situation, the Sanya fisheries department is conducting an in-depth investigation into the case and will strictly punish those involved in accordance with laws and regulations.

Large group of dead fish shocks Sanya Bay, stretching 600 meters along the beach

A large number of dead fish shockingly appears at Sanya Bay.

Business Daily reportOn August 10, a large number of dead fish shockingly appeared on nearly 600 meters of beach at Sanya Bay. After this news was first broadcast through "Ye Network," the official website of International Tourism Island Business Daily, it immediately aroused social attention. The cleanup work by the Tianya District Landscaping Office began at 5:30 on August 10 and did not end until 2:30 p.m. that day, clearing several thousand jin of dead fish. That day, after an intense investigation by the Sanya Ocean and Fisheries Bureau, the possibility that water quality caused the fish deaths was preliminarily ruled out, and the possibility was considered that damaged bottom trawl netting caused the catch to leak out or that individual fishermen dumped dead fish into the sea.
