Causes of Piglet Diarrhea and Diagnostic and Differential Diagnosis Methods, Worth Saving for Pig Farmers
Piglet diarrhea is a disease with a very high incidence rate in pig production. Whether it is a large-scale pig farm or a backyard raiser, everyone is familiar with it. Piglet diarrhea, if mild, affects growth; if severe, it can cause piglets to dehydrate and die quickly, causing huge losses to pig farms. At present, as the weather gradually turns colder, the incidence of diarrhea will rise significantly, so here I summarize the causes of diarrhea for everyone, hoping you can treat it according to the cause.

Causes of Piglet Diarrhea
1. Newborn piglets have an immature immune system and relatively weak immunity, so they cannot develop resistance to the outside environment, which leads to piglet diarrhea.
2. After weaning, piglets are separated from the sow, which can easily cause stress in piglets, leading to reduced resistance and diarrhea.
3. Newborn piglets have underdeveloped digestive organs, which can cause gastrointestinal dysfunction and lead to diarrhea.
4. Because newborn piglets have an immature nervous system and weak ability to regulate temperature, their resistance declines, which causes piglet diarrhea.
5. No milk after farrowing, or milk that is too thick or too thin, can also cause piglet diarrhea.
6. Porcine epidemic diarrhea, transmissible gastroenteritis, rotavirus and porcine pseudorabies are all diarrheas caused by viral diseases.
7. Escherichia coli can cause piglet yellow and white scour, Clostridium welchii type C can cause piglet red scour, Salmonella can cause piglet paratyphoid, and Brachyspira hyodysenteriae can cause piglet dysentery. All are diarrheas caused by bacterial diseases.
8. Parasitic diseases can also cause piglet diarrhea. It is mainly diarrhea caused by coccidia of the genera Eimeria and Isospora, and nematodes such as Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum, Trichuris and Strongyloides parasitizing in the digestive tract.
Differential Diagnosis Methods
1. Judge according to the piglet's age in days
Red scour occurs more often in piglets at 1~2 days of age, caused by Clostridium welchii type C. Yellow scour and white scour occur more often in piglets at 1~10 days of age, caused by Escherichia coli. Swine dysentery is caused by the interaction between Brachyspira hyodysenteriae in the intestine and anaerobic bacteria in the intestine. Coccidiosis occurs more often at 8~15 days of age. Rotavirus disease occurs more often at 10~60 days of age. Strongyloides occurs more often at 15~90 days of age.
2. Judge according to the pig's size
Diarrhea in small, weak pigs: mostly caused by hypoglycemia. Diarrhea in large, strong pigs: mostly clostridial enteritis.
3. Judge according to the degree of diarrhea in the pig
Hidden onset, slow spread, worsening over time, leading to bacterial or parasitic diarrhea. Explosive, rapidly spreading diarrhea leads to viral diarrhea.
4. Judge according to the feces
Watery and projectile-like is caused by viruses. Mucous and pasty is caused by bacteria. Pasty, yellow-gray, foul-smelling is caused by coccidial diarrhea. White pasty, yellow mucous is caused by Escherichia coli.
The above is an analysis of the classification and differential diagnosis of piglet diarrhea, and I hope it is helpful to all farmers.
