State Food and Drug Administration launches the Food Safety Check app, scan to check food safety information

On August 21, the State Food and Drug Administration launched the Food Safety Check, a food sampling inspection results inquiry app, containing the national and provincial and municipal sampling inspection databases since 2014. From today onward, consumers can scan the barcode on a product with their mobile phone to find out whether the food in their hands has appeared on the “food sampling inspection results blacklist.”

(Reporter Zhang Xiaomei) Does yogurt pass sampling inspections? Does this bottle of oil appear on the list of substandard foods? From today onward, scanning the barcode on a product with a mobile phone will reveal whether the food in your hands has appeared on the “food sampling inspection results blacklist.” On August 21, the State Food and Drug Administration launched the Food Safety Check, a food sampling inspection results inquiry app, containing the national and provincial and municipal sampling inspection databases since 2014, 160,000 items of food sampling inspection information, covering 33 categories of products, with substandard foods highlighted in red to provide consumers with a purchasing reference.

Regularly publishing food sampling inspection results is one of the routine tasks of the State Food and Drug Administration and the provincial and municipal food and drug administrations, and it is also food safety information that the general public pays close attention to. Previously, food sampling inspection results were mainly published through the official websites of the State Food and Drug Administration and the provincial and municipal food and drug administrations. Recently, the State Food and Drug Administration organized the development of the client for the food safety supervision sampling inspection information inquiry system - the Food Safety Check app. Yan Jiangying, director of the Department of News and Publicity of the State Food and Drug Administration, introduced that the data information of the Food Safety Check app comes precisely from the above-mentioned sampling inspection databases, including the qualified and unqualified results of food safety supervision sampling inspections published by the national and provincial-level food and drug administrations since 2014, amounting to a total of 160,000 items of product information, covering 33 major categories of products.

A reporter from Beijing Youth Daily tried out the “Food Safety Check app” and found that the app provides three ways to conduct inquiries: first, by entering a food name to quickly find the sampling inspection results for the food being searched, for example: entering “yogurt” can list the sampling inspection results of products whose food names contain the word “yogurt,” and entering “×× (brand)” can list the sampling inspection results of that brand's products; second, by selecting a food category to inquire about the sampling inspection results of the food, for example: clicking “dairy products” can list the sampling inspection results of that category of products; third, by scanning the product barcode to conduct an inquiry. All the above inquiry results will be displayed in order according to two sections, “products with all sampling inspection results qualified” and “products with unqualified sampling inspection results,” and unqualified products will be highlighted in red to help consumers avoid food safety risks. The Food Safety Check app was officially launched yesterday and can be downloaded, installed and used on mobile phones and tablet computers using the Android and Apple systems. In addition, inquiries can also be made through the web version of Food Safety Check.
