Changping strawberry output value jumped from ten-thousand yuan to one hundred million yuan in two years
When people in Beijing mention strawberries, Changping strawberries are the first that come to mind. Today, “Changping strawberry” has become a well-known agricultural brand of Changping District and an important pillar industry of the district's “one flower, three fruits” program. To promote the development of the strawberry industry, create jobs for surplus rural labor, and help farmers increase their incomes and become better off, 9 organizations including the Beijing Changping District Agricultural Service Center, the Beijing Agricultural Technology Extension Station, and Beijing Huanai Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. jointly implemented the project “Research and Application of Key Technologies for Strawberry Production in Changping District”.
The project's main technical components were as follows: First, the introduction and screening of new strawberry varieties. A total of 97 superior new strawberry varieties from home and abroad were introduced, and “Benihoppe” (“Hongyan”) and “Akihime” (“Zhangji”) were ultimately designated as the main varieties cultivated in Changping District; wild strawberries and red-flowered strawberries were introduced as science and technology exhibition items for the 7th World Strawberry Congress. Second, research on efficient propagation technology for high-quality strawberry seedlings, establishment of a strawberry tissue-culture rapid propagation center, and introduction of Japan's three-dimensional seedling cultivation method and rain-sheltered substrate seedling technology. Third, establishment of standardized strawberry seedling bases and formation of a professional strawberry seedling team. Fourth, identification of the main microbial species causing replant disease in continuous-cropping strawberry fields and of soil-borne diseases, and selection of different disinfection methods for soil disinfection based on soil monitoring results. Fifth, carrying out multiple trials in cultivation, plant protection, soil and fertilizer, and monitoring and testing, and formulating 2 Beijing municipal-level local standards and 2 Changping District-level local standards.
The project's implementation approaches and measures were mainly: establishing a high-altitude seedling demonstration base, a European and American specialized strawberry seedling demonstration base, and a strawberry cultivation demonstration base, and opening windows for displaying key technologies; organizing various forms of technical training, expert lectures, and field schools, and holding on-site technical observation meetings relying on farmers' professional cooperatives; establishing a complete district-wide technical service system and setting up a science and technology service team, with professional technicians assigned to towns and villages and households, identifying strawberry cultivation demonstration households in each village, and achieving full technical service coverage of strawberry-growing farmers; and forming industrial policies in line with actual production.
The project achieved good results and benefits. Over two years, key production technologies for solar greenhouse strawberries were extended over a cumulative 14,289 mu, with core technology coverage reaching 95%; solar greenhouse strawberry production grew from 2,000 units to 8,000 units, and the cultivated area quadrupled; output value rose from 67 million yuan to 379 million yuan, an increase of 4.6 times, realizing the upgrading and replacement of strawberry varieties from the European line to the Japanese line. Strawberry industry workers reached 2,000 farming households and more than 3,000 people, the industry chain reached more than 6,000 people, and employment was provided for nearly 10,000 people. At the same time, production technology and seedlings spread to major strawberry-producing areas across the country, promoting the development of the strawberry industry and increasing farmers' incomes.
