Zhang Shengyu: Raising Ducks on the Road to Prosperity

On September 4, Zhang Shengyu, a villager of the Hongyan group in Jianyan village, Chuantong subdistrict, Bijiang district, chatted about the "money prospects" of raising ecological ducks while feeding his ducks. Zhang Shengyu contracted more than 10 mu of land to raise ecological wild ducks, turning wasteland into golden land, with an annual slaughter of nearly 2,000 ecological wild ducks and an annual net income of 100,000 yuan.

Zhang Shengyu is 40 years old this year. He left home to work at the age of 15, taking odd jobs in Guangdong, Jiangsu and other places. Although his monthly wage rose from a few hundred yuan at first to several thousand yuan, he drifted between different places and factories, and it was not only hard work but also unprofitable. More than 20 years passed, and his family's living conditions still had not changed effectively. Zhang Shengyu realized that working for others was not a long-term solution, so he came up with the idea of returning home to develop.

At the end of 2015, while working in Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, Zhang Shengyu tasted by chance what he considered the most delicious dry-pot duck. He learned that the ducks at this restaurant were free-range ecological ducks, priced several times higher than ordinary farmed ducks, which made him determined to return home and start his own business based on the advantages of local natural resources.

In January 2016, he took out all his savings from years of working and raised more than 200,000 yuan through policy-supported loans and other means, building an ecological laying duck farm covering more than 10 mu in Hongyantang, Jianyan village. He also introduced flying ducks, spot-billed wild ducks and other breeds from other places. Under his scientific feeding, in less than a year all his ecological wild ducks were on the market, with an estimated annual net income of more than 100,000 yuan.

Having succeeded in starting his business, Zhang Shengyu next plans to expand the duck farm, enlarge the scale of duck raising, and add projects for breeding young wild ducks and raising meat ducks, so that targeted poor households can buy shares and follow the development path of "company + cooperative + farmers", adopting a one-stop production model of raising, purchasing, selling and processing to help the village's poor households escape poverty and become prosperous.
