Fuqing, Fujian: As Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, egg prices quietly rise

With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, a reporter's recent visits found that egg prices in supermarkets and farmers' markets in the urban area are on the rise.

In the egg sales section of a supermarket, the reporter saw quite a few customers picking out eggs, with ordinary eggs priced at 4.98 yuan per jin and free-range eggs at 5.38 yuan per jin.

“Recently, the purchase price of eggs has risen somewhat, but the supermarket's retail price has not been adjusted much,” a supermarket employee told the reporter.

“In the past week, the retail price of eggs has started to rise.” At a farmers' market, the owner of a grocery store told the reporter that previously the price of eggs was between 4 and 5 yuan per jin, but in recent days it has been selling for 5.5 yuan.

“Egg prices have risen a bit now, but the overall increase is not large, roughly just a few mao, which is within an acceptable range,” said Mr. Chen, a resident.

Industry insiders said the main reason for the recent rise in egg prices is that with the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, demand for eggs from food companies, hotels and residents has begun to increase, while laying hens are still in the summer rest period and production has not grown, causing prices to rise. In addition, with schools starting and the boost in consumption from the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, demand for eggs will only increase, and egg prices still have room to rise.
