As of September this year, the county's areca nut planting area exceeded 10,000 mu, with an annual output of nearly 1,000 tons of dried areca nuts and an annual output value of about 40 million, and areca nut cultivation has become a good industry for the broad masses of farmers to build wealth.
Wang Xian, director of the county Tropical Crops Center, introduced that our county actively encourages and guides farmers to develop distinctive and efficient agriculture, vigorously supports the development of the areca nut industry, promotes increased agricultural efficiency and farmers' income, and has become a good path for farmers to prosper.
Zhang Jun is an areca nut planting specialist in the Lincheng area. Since 2003, he has contracted more than 70 mu of sloped land in Dunli Village to plant areca nuts, and has made full use of the space under the forest to vigorously develop planting and breeding.
On September 3, the reporter came to Zhang Jun's areca nut tree planting base in Dunli Village. As soon as we walked into the areca nut planting base, waves of the fresh fragrance of areca nut came to the nose. Large areas of areca nut tree trunks stood tall and straight, the trees were covered with clusters of fruit, presenting a scene of a bumper harvest in sight, and the farmers working in the fields were also beaming with joy……
According to the base manager, the entire areca nut base has a planting area of more than 70 mu and nearly 10,000 areca nut trees. At the current market price of 20-30 yuan per jin, the output value of the areca nut industry has reached more than 300,000 yuan.
With Zhang Jun's help and encouragement, 5 local farming households planted more than 270 mu of areca nut trees on nearby sloped land, totaling more than 30,000 trees.
“Compared with other industries, I think areca nut is a good industry for farmers to build wealth.” Zhang Jun, head of the Dunli areca nut planting base, told the reporter: “Planting areca nut is relatively easy, easy to manage, easy to harvest, and the management is relatively extensive. When harvesting, the number of harvests is also relatively few, just a few times is enough, and it does not take much labor. If ordinary people want to plant, they should plant in a concentrated way, everyone planting together, managing together, and sprinkler irrigating together, so as to achieve economies of scale.”
According to the introduction, the areca nut tree is a long-term economic crop. After 6 to 8 years of planting, it can bear fruit, and the fruit fully matures each year from August to November. The annual output value of the areca nut industry reaches more than 1.2 million yuan, effectively promoting increased agricultural efficiency and farmers' income.
Fu Xingguan, manager of the Dunli areca nut planting base, told the reporter: “Planting areca nut is more wind-resistant than rubber, has a better harvest than rubber, and is wind-tolerant.”
