What will China's agriculture look like in 20 years?

What will China's agriculture look like in 20 years? Based on current national policies and trends, the author boldly predicts that China's agriculture will undergo the following major changes in the next 20 years:

  1. Agricultural branding

In future development, agricultural products will inevitably undergo branding. At present, many of the organic product bases the author has come into contact with already place great emphasis on branding their own products. Although brand recognition is not high, at least they already have this awareness! Take cucumbers as an example. When you go to the market to buy vegetables and tell the seller "I want one kilogram of cucumbers," the seller will ask: "What brand of cucumbers do you want?" Moreover, because of differences in variety, region and cultivation techniques, the price differences among different brands of cucumbers will be very large. By then, agricultural products will have brands, and different brands having different prices will become the norm.

  2. Large-scale agricultural operations

With the orderly reform of national land policy, 20 years from now, small farmers operating just a few mu of land will become fewer and fewer, and medium- and large-scale farmers will become the mainstream. There will be large-scale operators planting several thousand mu, or even over ten thousand mu, but there will not be many of them. (The author predicts that China's agriculture will not develop into the large-scale agricultural economy of the European and American model, nor into the smallholder economy of the Japanese and South Korean model. The former causes large numbers of farmers to lose their jobs, while the latter results in insufficient output.)

  3. Agricultural product prices will rise significantly

Good farmers, good products; high quality, high price. Twenty years from now, the average price of agricultural products will probably rise by 5 to 10 times compared with the current average price. Compared with 20 years ago, the current price increases for agricultural products have already exceeded 10 times. The price increases mentioned here do not take inflation into account; they are solely due to the increase in value brought about by higher quality agricultural products.

  4. Farmers will be highly qualified

At present, the vast majority of farmers in China have relatively low educational qualifications and knowledge levels, and the overall educational level of the people engaged in agricultural production is on the low side. Twenty years from now, things will be different: the vast majority of farmers will be highly qualified people. They will come from three groups: first, industrial and commercial entrepreneurs; second, university graduates; and third, skilled farmers in rural areas. On the other hand, training for new farmers will also become the norm in the future.

  5. Agricultural mechanization

Twenty years from now, whether it is large-scale agriculture or smallholder farming, all stages of agricultural production, such as irrigation, sowing and harvesting, will be mechanized. Agricultural production will become easier, and farmers will be liberated from heavy physical labor. At the same time, agricultural materials and tools that meet the needs of these two forms will also become a very important industrial and commercial market.

In response to these changes, whether they are traditional agricultural practitioners or new entrants starting businesses in new agriculture, all need to grasp future trends and prepare well to respond to changes, adapting to all changes with change, so that they can establish themselves for the long term in the broad field of agriculture!
