Vegetable prices in Yinchuan, Ningxia drop noticeably after Mid-Autumn Festival
A week after the Mid-Autumn Festival and Corban Festival holidays, the prices of all 15 vegetables monitored and tracked by the Price Bureau of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region fell sharply, with some leafy greens dropping by more than 40%.
In early September, affected by multiple factors including the arrival of the two festivals, recent rainy weather in Yinchuan, a lower variety and supply of locally grown autumn vegetables compared with last year, and higher purchase prices of vegetables from other regions, the prices of all 15 vegetables monitored before the holidays rose, with 9 varieties increasing by more than 10%.
As the holiday effect weakened, since mid-to-late September the wholesale prices of vegetables at the Beihuan Wholesale Market have been declining all the way. The prices recorded on September 26 were: tomatoes 0.86 yuan/jin, green beans 1.38 yuan/jin, eggplants 0.38 yuan/jin, Chinese cabbage 0.38 yuan/jin, cucumbers 0.98 yuan/jin.
According to staff at the Beihuan Wholesale Market, after the holidays the volume of local vegetables entering the market rebounded somewhat, and the nearly 400 tons entering daily greatly made up for the shortfall in vegetables brought in from other regions. “Local vegetables plus vegetables from other regions, a total of about 1,500 tons per day, can meet the vegetable consumption of the whole city and surrounding areas, basically consistent with previous years.”
It is also learned that in late September, the prices of grain and oil, meat and poultry, eggs, and aquatic products all entered a downward channel. The price department predicts that grain and oil prices will remain mainly stable later on, and with the arrival of National Day, demand in the meat, poultry and egg market will increase somewhat, with overall prices expected to show a slight upward trend.
