Dongguan, Guangdong: Hairy Crab Prices Rose This Year, Residents' Desire to Buy Is Not High

“When the autumn wind blows, the crabs are fat and delicious.” When reporters visited Houjie Hongqiao Market, Damingtang Market and other places, they found that hairy crabs had already gradually gone on the market. It is understood that the price of newly listed hairy crabs rose by 20% to 40% year on year. A hairy crab weighing three liang costs about 55 yuan per jin, and one weighing four liang costs about 75 yuan per jin.

Stallholders: Hairy Crab Prices Rose This Year

At Houjie Hongqiao Market, reporters saw several stalls in the seafood area specializing in hairy crabs, all marked “authentic Jiangsu hairy crabs.” According to one of the hairy crab stallholders, these hairy crabs began to go on the market before the Mid-Autumn Festival, and prices rose, while sales were very poor. On the one hand, they were affected by the high temperatures in August, and a large number of hairy crabs died. On the other hand, due to floods and other disasters in June and July, more hairy crabs were washed away or died, and total output decreased, leading to higher prices.

“This year the overall price of hairy crabs rose by 20% to 40%. A three-liang hairy crab is 55 yuan per jin, and a four-liang hairy crab is 75 yuan per jin. The hairy crabs on the market now are not large and not fat enough yet. It is not until the ninth lunar month that hairy crabs become fat and delicious,” said the hairy crab stallholder. At the same price, female hairy crabs are much smaller, but now is the time to eat female hairy crabs. Female crabs have more roe and taste better.

Residents: Desire to Buy Is Not High

Because the price of hairy crabs rose quite a bit this year, and they had only been on the market for more than a week, there were few buyers and business was bleak. “Last year at the Mid-Autumn Festival I sold more than 200 jin of hairy crabs. This year I took in more than 40 jin of hairy crabs and still could not sell them all,” another hairy crab stallholder said helplessly.

While reporters were interviewing the hairy crab stallholder, several residents came to choose and buy hairy crabs. After learning that the price had risen quite a bit, they immediately lost the desire to buy.

Crab Selection Tips: The Redder the Color on Both Sides of the Hairy Crab's Navel, the More Crab Roe There Is

A hairy crab stallholder at Hongqiao Market told reporters that to see whether a hairy crab is fresh, first touch the hairy crab's eyes to see whether they flicker, then put it in water to see whether it bubbles, and you can also pull the last segment of the crab claw. If it is fresh, the crab claw will bend automatically. In addition, to see whether a hairy crab is fat and delicious, mainly look at the crab body and rear. The thicker the crab body and rear, the more meat there is. You can also press the crab legs with your hand. A hairy crab with plump meat will not feel hollow when pinched. Also, red will show through on both sides of the hairy crab's navel. The redder the color, the more crab roe there is.
