Xu Xiqing: A model worker who became wealthy by raising pigs

Xu Xiqing is 58 years old and a former village cadre from Dalihu Village, Shiqiaozi Town, Zhucheng City. At the age of 40, he was diagnosed with femoral head necrosis and had no choice but to resign and start a pig farm. Today, Xu Xiqing's Kanglebao Pig Breeding Farm has achieved an annual income of more than 2 million yuan, with an annual output of more than 1,500 pigs, and a total building area of about 4,700 sq m, making it the largest pig farm in the entire town.

News report: At the age of 40, Xu Xiqing was suddenly diagnosed with femoral head necrosis, which was a bolt from the blue for him, as he had elderly parents above and young children below. Xu Xiqing resigned from his village post and opened a hotel with a partner, but the hotel closed soon after. After a period of confusion, he pulled himself together again. Through investigations from multiple sources, he learned that the pig market was doing well and resolved to go into pig farming. In 2005, he rented an abandoned primary school in Xiangzhou Town, Zhucheng City, and began his business.

Xu Xiqing fed the pigs during the day and studied breeding techniques at night. At first, he had no experience, and when the accounts were settled at the end of the year, he found that he had made no money at all. But he refused to give in. He looked for the reasons, asked others for advice when he did not know something, and at the same time paid attention to market conditions, controlling the number of pigs raised according to demand. In this way, his business got better and better. Five years passed, and Xu Xiqing had accumulated a certain amount of capital. To make it easier to care for his elderly mother, he returned to his village in 2011 and built a pig farm there. He continuously introduced fine-breed breeding pigs, and with the support of the state's various preferential policies for rural breeding and for people with disabilities, the farm thrived.

But entrepreneurship cannot always go smoothly. In 2013, the pig market was weak, and because epidemic prevention measures were not kept up, more than 260 pigs died of disease on Xu Xiqing's farm, with a loss of 220,000 yuan, and in 2014 he lost nearly 100,000 yuan again. He gritted his teeth and looked for ways out of the predicament. Finally, in 2015 he once again welcomed a springtime for the pig market. Now his pig farm has an annual output of 1,500 pigs and achieves an annual income of more than 2 million yuan.

Led by Xu Xiqing, more than 100 pig-raising households developed in the whole village, and the village's Kanglebao Pig Breeding Professional Cooperative was established. As the scale and number of pig breeding in their village continued to expand and their influence continued to strengthen, many large slaughterhouses took the initiative to call and make appointments to come to the doorstep to purchase pigs, solving the worries about pig sales.
