China will improve supporting regulations and systems for food safety

Bi Jingquan, head of the Office of the Food Safety Commission of the State Council and director of the China Food and Drug Administration, said China will improve supporting regulations and systems for food safety.

Bi Jingquan made the remarks at a symposium held on the 30th marking the first anniversary of the implementation of the new Food Safety Law.

It is understood that the newly revised Food Safety Law officially took effect on October 1 last year.

Bi Jingquan said the Office of the Food Safety Commission of the State Council will actively cooperate with the Legislative Affairs Commission of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council and other relevant units to promptly revise the Law on Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products as well as other administrative regulations, rules and standards supporting the Food Safety Law.

It is introduced that at present China still has many hidden food safety risks; the lack of standards easily gives rise to systemic risks; the overall social environment of upholding morality and abiding by the law has not yet fully taken shape, and some food producers and operators have a weak awareness of the law; and the unified and authoritative food safety supervision system still needs to be improved.
