He raises pigs and becomes a "pig commander," holding up a family
Although the cold wind was blowing, the heart of Wang Mingyuan, a poor household, was warm.
On November 30, looking at the newly completed reinforced concrete house in front of him, and then at the 10 plump and sturdy big fat pigs in the pigpen, Wang Mingyuan's face was full of smiles: "I never imagined that a poor household like me could still build a new house! These 10 pigs can be sold before the Spring Festival, and I believe the poverty hat can soon be taken off. From the bottom of my heart, I thank the government. The assistance to us poor households is so timely!"
Wang Mingyuan, nearly 60 years old, is a poor household in Wencai Village, Longtang Community, Longtang Town, Qiongshan District, Haikou City. His family has only a little more than 1 mu of paddy field and sloping land. In the past, he relied on odd jobs to make a living, and the family's per capita annual income was only 1,800 yuan.
"Misfortunes never come singly." In April last year, Wang Mingyuan's wife, Wu Fouxiang, was hospitalized for surgery due to cerebral hemorrhage, and the medical expenses cost more than 100,000 yuan. She still cannot walk on the ground and can only sit in a wheelchair or lie in bed, requiring someone to care for her. This made the originally poor family even worse, and Wang Mingyuan's family became poor because of illness.
Shao Hongjin, secretary and director of the Longtang Community Residents' Committee, said that although Wang Mingyuan's wife had fallen ill, he did not become depressed because of it. He has a spirit of enterprise and a strong desire to escape poverty.
"My wife has fallen ill, but I still have to hold up this family. No matter how hard or tiring it is, I must strive to escape poverty!" Wang Mingyuan radiated full positive energy.
In the first half of this year, when the town's poverty alleviation working group carried out household surveys, Wang Mingyuan revealed his desire to escape poverty: "My wife is ill and needs me to take care of her at home, and my son has also gone out to work. I have raised pigs before, so I have some experience after all. I hope I can escape poverty by raising pigs."
The town government respected Wang Mingyuan's desire to escape poverty. Starting in June this year, it sent him 26 piglets in two batches.
"Wang Mingyuan is hardworking and capable. He raised several thousand yuan himself to expand the pigpen from the original one to 3." Shao Hongjin introduced.
After the government supported him with 26 piglets, Wang Mingyuan became a "pig commander." He was very devoted to raising pigs and took meticulous care of the piglets, feeding them wheat bran, cassava powder, corn powder, and so on every day. "Only by eating well can they put on fat quickly!" Wang Mingyuan said with a smile.
Every morning, Wang Mingyuan had to clean the pigpen, keep the pigpen clean, and prevent disease.
In order to raise the pigs well, Wang Mingyuan also went to neighboring villages to ask some large pig-raising households for advice on pig-raising techniques. He also went to a bookstore to buy several books about pig raising and taught himself pig-raising techniques.
In October this year, the strong typhoon "Sarika" struck Hainan, with fierce winds and driving rain. The tile roof of Wang Mingyuan's pigpen was lifted by the strong wind and damaged to varying degrees. Wang Mingyuan did not wait or rely on others. After the storm, he immediately asked relatives for help and worked together in time to repair the pigpen.
Every day he had to take care of his sick wife, raise pigs, and handle household chores. After being exhausted for a long time, Wang Mingyuan lost a lot of weight, but his heart was warm. "Yesterday I just sold 8 pigs, with an income of nearly 20,000 yuan. This year I have already sold two batches of pigs, and the price was not bad!" Wang Mingyuan said.
For Wang Mingyuan, building a new house was another great happy event for his family this year! In June this year, the government subsidized him with 70,000 yuan in funds for renovating a dilapidated house. He demolished the old tile-roofed house he had lived in for more than 40 years and built a 120-square-meter new house. "The new house cost 120,000 yuan in total. Besides the 70,000 yuan government subsidy, I paid a little myself, and relatives also helped a little. If it were not for the government's assistance, I do not know how many years I would have had to wait to build a new house." Wang Mingyuan was grateful.
Wang Mingyuan said that in the future he will continue to raise pigs and plans to open a small shop at home to increase income.
As night fell, Wang Mingyuan was still busy in the pigpen. The light in the pigpen lit up the hope of escaping poverty in his heart.
