Eggs cost 1.5 yuan each, and orders are already booked half a month ahead.
The Barred Plymouth Rock chickens raised by Sun Limin have a relatively long breeding cycle, generally laying eggs only after 5 to 6 months. The eggs are not large, but the meat is excellent and delicious, with low fat content. The eggs are of good quality with large yolks, and no additives are fed during the rearing process, which can meet the public's demand for a healthy diet.
With corn and soybean cake as staple food, green grass and small insects as snacks, and clam shells as calcium tablets, and living in a "dormitory" of more than 1,300 sq m, the nearly 10,000 Wenshang Barred Plymouth Rock chickens raised by Sun Limin, a villager of Yangjing Village, Erba Town, Hulan District, have become the golden key to wealth for the whole village.
Relying on years of market investigation and understanding, Sun Limin raised 1.6 million yuan in funds and built a farm covering an area of 10,000 sq m and 3 connected chicken houses. He also went to Wenshang, Shandong, many times to inspect, and spent more than 300,000 yuan to buy back high-quality Barred Plymouth Rock breeding eggs, and found a professional hatchery for incubation. At the end of May this year, the first batch of Barred Plymouth Rock chicks arrived.
Except in winter, the Barred Plymouth Rock chickens are raised outdoors in the open area eating green grass. Sun Limin also spreads sweet wormwood on the ground of the area and waters it. After 3 to 5 days, many small insects will appear under the sweet wormwood, and these small insects are the favorite of the Barred Plymouth Rock chickens. Sun Limin crushes the clam shells and meat caught by the river together with a grinder, then mixes them into the chicken feed to supplement calcium. The lights in the area at night attract many small flying insects, and the Barred Plymouth Rock chickens jump up like dancing to compete for the small flying insects to eat. They also often fight with each other over "territory"... After snow in winter, the chickens can wander freely in the 1,300 sq m chicken house, and at night they fly up to the 1-meter-high railings and squat there to sleep. A reasonable diet plus frequent exercise has turned Sun Limin's Barred Plymouth Rock chickens into "bodybuilding chickens." This is also one of the reasons why the Barred Plymouth Rock chickens raised by Sun Limin are not large in size but delicious in meat, low in fat, and have good egg quality and large yolks.
After more than 5 months of careful rearing, at present, the 7,500 chickens in Sun Limin's Barred Plymouth Rock chicken farm have gradually begun laying eggs, with about 300 eggs laid each day. Sun Limin said: "The eggs sell for 1.5 yuan each and are in short supply. The eggs half a month from now have already been booked. Entering December, daily egg production will reach about 3,000." Seeing Sun Limin become rich by raising Barred Plymouth Rock chickens, the villagers also began to have the idea of raising them. Sun Limin never refuses villagers who come to ask for advice, and also lets them choose chickens from the farm area to take home and raise, and provides breeding techniques for free.
With this year's experience, Sun Limin plans to hatch another 10,000 chickens next year, and in May the farm will have 13,000 hens; by October next year, daily egg production will reach 10,000.
