Premium baby napa cabbage sold by the head doubles profits in Bozhou, Anhui
Vegetables are usually sold by weight, but the baby napa cabbage in Niuji Town, Qiaocheng District, is sold by the head. "Don't underestimate these little baby napa cabbages. With simple packaging like this, each head can sell for 0.8 yuan!" On the morning of November 25, Han Yezhi, a major baby napa cabbage grower in the town, told reporters while directing workers to package the baby napa cabbage.
It is reported that baby napa cabbage is a premium vegetable. Niuji Town in Qiaocheng District has a 10-year history of growing baby napa cabbage. Based on years of growing experience, local major growers have figured out a way to increase income and become prosperous, which is to cater to consumer psychology and create "premium baby napa cabbage." This not only lets consumers eat green, highly nutritious, safe vegetables, but also makes the villagers' wallets fuller.

Baby napa cabbage enjoys a good harvest
After the light snow weather, warm sunshine arrived. The baby napa cabbage growing in the fields, bathed in snowmelt, looked even more emerald-bright and fair. Xie Gongzi, a villager from Luozhuang, was busy harvesting in his own field. Looking across, the whole field was filled with fresh, tender green baby napa cabbage, and six or seven vegetable farmers were bustling with activity.
"In cold weather, more people eat hot pot, and baby napa cabbage is the most popular. I have to help my son harvest it quickly and sell it for a good price." Xie Gongzi's mother, in her seventies, told reporters that the baby napa cabbage in this field was planted after sorghum. They had already earned income for one season in summer, and now the baby napa cabbage can also sell for quite a bit of money. The common people's lives are getting better and better!
Following Xie Gongzi's tricycle loaded with baby napa cabbage, the reporter went all the way to the local baby napa cabbage purchasing point - Han Yezhi Baby Napa Cabbage Production Cooperative in Hanjiangzhuang, Liji Village, Niuji Town. The simple shed was piled full of freshly harvested baby napa cabbage, and workers were busy removing debris, peeling leaves, packing, and bagging... Many villagers were lining up to wait to unload their goods.
"No need to transport it elsewhere; it can sell for a good price right at our doorstep." While waiting to unload the vegetables, Xie Gongzi chatted with the reporter enthusiastically. From him, the reporter learned that his family planted more than 10 mu of baby napa cabbage this autumn. Although it was somewhat dry in early autumn, the rainfall later was favorable, and the growth was no worse than in previous years, with income reaching more than 3,000 yuan per mu.
Being rich yourself is not as good as everyone being rich
Niuji Town has a history of growing baby napa cabbage for more than 10 years. This has quite a lot to do with the person in charge of Han Yezhi Baby Napa Cabbage Production Cooperative. Back then, through inspections elsewhere, Han Yezhi learned that baby napa cabbage has the characteristics of a short growing cycle, quick results, and high income. Its nutritional value also ranks first among all kinds of vegetables, and there is large market demand. So he set up an experimental field on his own 10 mu of contracted land.
"At that time I still did not understand growing techniques and only relied on past vegetable-growing experience, so quite a lot rotted. Even so, the average yield per mu still reached more than 5,000 kg, and total income that year was nearly more than 30,000 yuan." Han Yezhi said this gave him confidence to expand planting. Later, he went many times to places such as Shouguang, Shandong to learn from experience, and only then finally mastered a complete set of scientific methods for green cultivation, management, and sales of baby napa cabbage.
In recent years, relying on microcredit and support from relevant local departments, Han Yezhi's baby napa cabbage planting area has grown larger and larger. At present, he has contracted more than 600 mu for planting and has become a widely known major specialized baby napa cabbage grower.
"If you are rich yourself, that is not called being rich. Being able to be rich together with everyone, that is truly being rich." After becoming wealthy, Han Yezhi did not forget the dream of joining hands with his neighbors to stride toward a moderately prosperous life. In recent years, he has taken the initiative to "bring in" farmers as cooperative members and provide farmers with one-stop training services covering production, supply, marketing, and technical guidance. Under Han Yezhi's leadership, at present, the baby napa cabbage planting area in Niuji Town has reached more than 2,000 mu, with annual income of about 10 million yuan.
Profits from "premium baby napa cabbage" more than double
"I have been working at the cooperative these past two years and can earn about 100 yuan in wages each day. I can also take care of my family. Counting it up, this is much better than going out to work!" Wang Xiaohua, a villager who was packaging baby napa cabbage at Han Yezhi's cooperative, told reporters that the cooperative has many sales methods and also gives idle labor in the village a chance to earn money. "Look, these baby napa cabbages being packaged instantly become 'premium baby napa cabbage.' Not only do they sell at a higher price, but they also give villagers something to do. It is truly a double benefit!" Wang Xiaohua said happily.
The sales idea for premium baby napa cabbage is also related to Han Yezhi. Based on many years of planting, Han Yezhi figured out a way to increase income and become prosperous, not only letting consumers eat green, highly nutritious, safe vegetables, but also making the villagers' wallets fuller. This year, he bought back farmers' baby napa cabbage at 0.5 yuan per head. After procedures such as removing debris and packaging, it directly entered large supermarkets in cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing, and Ningbo, where each head can sell for 0.8 yuan. Compared with transporting it to the vegetable wholesale market, the price is four times higher.
The reporter learned that the Niuji Town government also put in a lot of effort to help farmers increase income and become prosperous. In addition to guiding farmers to adjust the industrial structure, encouraging farmers to diversify planting, and promptly providing standardized guidance in planting techniques, field management, sales channels, and other aspects, it also actively advocated the "company + family farm" production model and promoted contract farming. At the same time, relevant departments also actively contacted banks to provide farmers with microcredit and solve the problem of farmers' shortage of funds.
