Returning college graduate students farm Hemei crabs, annual sales reach 3 million yuan
In 2013, in order to protect and make use of "Hemei crab," a brand unique to Wanning, returning Hainan-born college students Zhuo Qihui, Gu Xunxiang, Fu Xilai and others formed Hainan Wanning Kelaibu Aquatic Products Technology Co., Ltd., beginning their entrepreneurial journey of Hemei crab restoration and Xiaohai ecological conservation.
After 3 years of development, Kelaibu Technology Company has formed a technology-supported business system integrating Hemei crab (mangrove mud crab, Scylla serrata) seedling breeding, ecological farming, and commercial adult crab sales, with current annual sales reaching 3 million yuan. In 2015, this young team of college students won first prize in that year's Hainan Provincial Entrepreneurship Competition with their project "Industrialized Production and Internet Marketing of Hemei Crab."
"Hemei crab," one of Hainan's four famous dishes, comes from Xiaohai in Wanning. "Coming home to start a business is not just about profit; the most important thing is to seek out the unique flavors of our hometown and protect the superior ecological environment of Xiaohai," said Zhuo Qihui, who is now the company's chairman.
Zhuo Qihui, a native of Wanning, gave up his trading job at the end of 2012 and returned with Gu Xunxiang, Fu Xilai and 4 others to Wuchang Village in Wanning, renting 60 mu of land in the Xiaohai farming area and beginning his entrepreneurial journey of farming Hemei crabs.
The entrepreneurial process was arduous. This team of returning college graduates experienced the total loss of the crab seedlings they released, and their entire investment going down the drain... But this team of college students always held fast to their entrepreneurial dream. Time and again they rallied from failure, consulting domestic and foreign crab-farming materials, humbly seeking advice from experts, trying over a hundred kinds of crab feed, continuously testing farming density, simulating the crabs' wild environment, and patrolling the ponds twice as often as others every day... It was precisely because they defied hardship that they created a miracle. That year, the Kelaibu team's 60-mu pond created a "miracle" of 700,000 yuan in sales.
After 3 years of development, the Wanning returning college graduate student entrepreneurial team is moving onto the fast track. To date, Kelaibu owns 300 mu of crab ponds; a workshop of 2,000 sq m with an annual seedling capacity of up to 5 million; and partnerships with JD.com, ICBC E-Purchasing, Hainan Airlines and others for Hemei crab sales...
In response to the company's growing momentum, this young Wanning returning college graduate student entrepreneurial team has another new idea: to restore the ponds to their original wetland environment and develop eco-tourism. They hope to create a new model of ecological farming that combines "marine aquaculture + wetland protection + eco-tourism."
