There are several types of anemones, including spring-blooming and fall-blooming varieties. What is interesting, and even a factor in anemone plant care, is that each of these types grows differently. For example, spring-blooming anemone plants typically grow from rhizomes or tubers. However, fall-blooming types usually have fibrous or tuberous roots. Planting Anemone Windflowers You can plant anemones just about anywhere. However, their location should be chosen with care, because their spreading growth habit can become rather aggressive. Therefore, when planting anemone windflowers, you may want to consider placing them in a bottomless container before setting them into the garden.

That said, plant anemones in spring or fall, depending on your type. Before planting, soak the tubers overnight, then place them in well-draining, fertile soil, preferably in a slightly shaded area. Plant the anemones about 3 to 4 inches deep on their sides, and space them about 4 to 6 inches apart. Anemone Flower Care Once established, anemone care includes watering only as needed and keeping old foliage removed by cutting it back to the ground before new growth appears. In spring, rhizome clumps can be divided every two to three years. Tuberous types are best divided during dormancy, usually in summer.
