The price of a gamecock is calculated not by size but by quality, and usually ranges from several hundred to several thousand. Generally, an ordinary gamecock chick costs around 30 yuan, Vietnamese gamecock chicks cost 50-100 yuan, and adult Vietnamese fighting gamecocks cost around 1000-5000 yuan each.

Common breeds of gamecock

1. Vietnamese gamecock: no comb or wattles, the head is rounder and smoother than other gamecock breeds, the beak is thick and short, cone-shaped, with no beak hook, the neck is thick and short, the body is also slightly round, sturdy as an ox, with endless stamina, amazing explosive power, extremely high intelligence, long lifespan, and a fierce crow. The distinguishing feature of the legs is that the shanks and toes are white, four-sided prism-shaped, hard as iron, with fine dense scales, and the spur is flat and round, almost not growing out. After crossbreeding with gamecocks from other countries, it can noticeably improve speed and endurance.

2. Zhongyuan gamecock: semi-prismatic in shape, small head, thin and tight scalp. Long sloping face, fine feathers. Comb is tumor-shaped. Wattles are no longer obvious. Beak is short and thick, curved. Eyes are large, eye sockets deep, iris is watery white eye and pea green eye. Earlobes are short and small. Gamecocks have a wide variety of feather colors; black-feathered gamecocks have glossy feathers like black satin, with white down feathers on the abdomen, roosters have two white sickle feathers in the tail, hens should have a snowflake crown; red-feathered roosters are jujube red, sickle feathers are either all black or with white spots, hens have cowpea red and white.

3. Turpan gamecock: the comb is a low, small multiple comb, and the comb, wattles, and earlobes are all red. The beak is brown, with a red skin fold growing below the beak. The iris is red-brown. Feather colors are divided into three types: black, hemp, and light chestnut brown. Rooster sickle feathers are black with a bronze luster. Shanks are flesh-colored, and also blue. Some have neck feathers and skin that are flesh-colored.

4. Xishuangbanna gamecock: small head, semi-shuttle-shaped. Pea comb, comb and earlobes red. Beak short and thick, curved, yellow or brown. Iris is orange-red. There are many feather color types, with pure black, pure white, and crimson as the three main colors; shanks are yellow or slate-colored, with no shank feathers. Four toes. Skin is white.

How to select a gamecock

1. Temperament: A gamecock will actively seek out the opponent to attack under any circumstances, especially in the later rounds it must be eager to fight, must fight a lying-down chicken, and in the residual rounds must lie down without leaving; it would rather die than submit, and as long as it has a breath it must fight to the end. During the attack, any show of retreat is not allowed, and a half-hearted attacking posture is not allowed; the attack must be resolute and proactive.

2. Bones: Due to the gamecock's special temperament and fighting needs, its bones must be solid, and the length and thickness proportions of the bones in all parts must be well-proportioned. Being too thin and long or too short and thick is not conducive to fighting.

3. Body type: The gamecock's front chest must be wide, the feathers must be compact, and the body frame must be neat. Therefore, experienced gamecock keepers have a saying: "small head, big body frame, thin legs, line-crawling claws," and they use this to select the chicken's body type.

4. Weight: Gamecock weight is generally divided into three grades: large gamecocks weigh around 4 kg, medium gamecocks around 3.5 kg, and small gamecocks around 3 kg. Roosters of the super-large gamecock type can weigh around 5 kg. Because the body is heavy and movements are slow, which is not conducive to fighting, very few people raise super-large gamecocks. Hen gamecocks are smaller than rooster gamecocks: large hens are over 3.5 kg, medium hens around 3 kg, and small hens 2.5-3 kg.

5. Feather color: Gamecock enthusiasts are very particular about feather color, and generally regard blue, red, purple, and soap as the superior colors. Blue is blue-black feathers, with a greenish-blue sheen on the front, and the underdown is white sand tail. Red means the neck and back have red feathers, the side feathers are gray-brown, and the tail is black or with white sand tail. Purple means the neck and back feathers are deep red or black-red, with two types: blue-purple and white down. Soap color means the whole body's feathers are uniformly black, black like soap cloth with no luster.

6. Head: For a gamecock's head, a small face with tight, thin, and fine skin is good; the earrings must be small, with no double folds; the forehead must be broad and thick; the eye sockets must be deep and large; the comb must be small and upright; and the facial features must be well-coordinated. The mouth shape is required to be both thick and straight, and long and pointed; a large arched mouth shape is not good, and a pointed and sharp mouth is best. Those that are too thin and too long are not acceptable. The tip of the beak must be pure, generally only yellow and white; the beak color of adult gamecocks must not carry black. The nostrils must flare outward, and the nostrils must be large and long.

7. Eye color: Gamecock eye color is very particular, generally divided into three types: white, yellow, and red, as well as chrysanthemum, pea green, etc. Pure white is the top grade. The two eyes must be spirited, the gaze must be sharp, and at the same time the eye sockets deep and the pupils small.

8. Comb shape: Gamecock comb shapes are generally divided into two major categories: flat-top and flower comb. Flat-top is also called top-head, and among top-heads there are narrow face, wide face, goose top, and persimmon-cake comb. Flower combs include upturned flower comb, small flower comb, large flower comb, longevity-star comb, and mountain-cleaving axe. According to fighting requirements, small and fine ones are best.

9. Legs and claws: A gamecock's legs are divided into thighs and shanks. The curvature of the thighs and shanks must be large; a large curvature gives strong jumping ability. The thighs must be thick, the shanks thin, and the meat should grow on the thighs; the shanks should be skin and bones, without a bit of meat. The rear small claws must extend backward so as to stand and land steadily.
