Simmental cattle are distributed from the forest steppe and Horqin grassland in the northeast of China in the north, to the Nanling Mountains and their mountainous areas in central-south China in the south, and to the vast grasslands and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the west. The natural environments vary greatly from place to place. The average highest summer temperature is 30°C in the central-south region and 0°C in the northeast, while the average lowest winter temperature ranges from 15°C in the south to -20°C in the north, and the absolute highest and lowest temperatures vary even more. The average annual precipitation in various places ranges from 200 mm to 1500 mm, with the highest altitude reaching 3800 m and the lowest only several hundred meters. The differences in soil, crops, and the vegetation types of grasslands and grassy hills are enormous, yet Simmental cattle can adapt very well to all of them. Except for the Pengbo Farm in Tibet, which is located above 3800 m and should introduce breeding stock from the calf stage, all places can breed their own stock.
Farming characteristics of Simmental cattle
Simmental cattle have the characteristics of a large frame, fast growth, more muscle, and less fat. Bulls can reach a body height of 150 to 160 cm, and cows can reach 135 to 142 cm. The leg muscles are well developed, the body is cylindrical in shape, and there is little fat. Early growth is fast, and they are famous for high meat production performance and a carcass with much lean meat. During the fattening period, the average daily gain is 1.5 to 2 kg, and cattle at 12 months of age can reach 500 to 550 kg. In contrast, cattle of local breeds gain only 0.7 to 1 kg per day, showing how large the gap is.
Management of Simmental breeding bulls
The service life of Simmental cattle is about 6 to 8 years. Only by using bulls correctly can the service life of bulls be extended. When a breeding bull grows to 16 to 18 months of age and its body weight reaches more than 560 kg, it can begin training for mating or semen collection, with young bulls doing so twice a week, and at 2 years of age they can be transferred to normal mating or semen collection, 2 to 3 times a week.
