How much does Guangxi Shatian pomelo cost?

Shatian pomelo is one of the most famous fruits of Guangxi. More than two hundred years ago, it was first planted in Shatian Village, Rong County, Guangxi, and was therefore called Shatian pomelo. When ripe, it is bright yellow in color, and a coin-shaped ring mark can be seen at the bottom, commonly known as the “coin mark”. The pomelo flesh is sweet, moist and juicy, crisp and refreshing, making it an excellent fruit for autumn and winter. Now let us take a look at how much Guangxi Shatian pomelo costs!

How much does Shatian pomelo cost?

The price of Shatian pomelo is classified by grade. Premium Shatian pomelo costs about 5 yuan per jin, ordinary varieties about 3.5 yuan, and lower-quality ones about 2 yuan. At the same time, the price of Shatian pomelo also fluctuates depending on the year. In a good year with high yield, the overall price is somewhat cheaper; otherwise, it is somewhat more expensive.

Where is the producing area of Shatian pomelo?

Shatian pomelo is a local specialty of Rong County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Because it was first planted in Shatian Village, Rong County, Guangxi, it was called Shatian pomelo. As early as the 1930s, it was exported to Hong Kong, China, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas. It has now been expanded to the Xunjiang, Longjiang, Guijiang, Lijiang and Hongshui River basins in Guangxi and other places. Guangdong, Hunan, Sichuan, Zhejiang and Jiangxi have also introduced it one after another. In 2013, Guangxi became China's largest concentrated producing area of Shatian pomelo, with the planting area of Shatian pomelo in the whole autonomous region reaching several hundred thousand mu.

How to choose Shatian pomelo

1. Weigh: Grasp the general principle of the “roly-poly”. A pomelo that is small in appearance but heavy in weight contains more water. Generally, a palm-sized pomelo weighing about 3 jin is quite good. Among pomelos of the same size, choose the heavier one. If the individual is large but light in weight, then the rough pomelo peel is very thick and the flesh is scant, and the taste is not good.

2. Look: A pointed top and wide bottom is the standard shape of a pomelo. Among them, it is better to choose a pomelo that is flat and round with a short neck (it is even better if the bottom is flat). This is because a pomelo with a long neck has less segmented flesh and appears to have more peel. If the pomelo peel is fine and smooth, the oil cells on the surface are semi-transparent, and the color is pale yellow or orange-yellow, it indicates that the pomelo is highly ripe, with abundant juice and sweet taste.

3. Press: When pressing hard, if it is not easy to press down, it indicates that the segments inside are firm and the flesh is both sweet and tender, with good quality.
