High-quality vegetables grown in the coastal saline-alkali land of Caofeidian, Tangshan

According to a report in Tangshan Labor Daily, a reporter recently learned from the Coastal Agriculture Institute of the Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences that breakthrough progress has been made in research on a high-efficiency facility agriculture utilization model for China's coastal heavily saline-alkali land - the institute has used an original-soil improvement and salt-reduction cultivation model for coastal heavily saline-alkali land, enabling coastal saline soil to be used directly for facility agriculture. This technology fills the gap in Hebei Province for cultivating facility vegetables in original soil in coastal saline-alkali land.

The soil improvement and salt reduction facility cultivation model for coastal heavily saline-alkali land studied by the institute mainly uses an integration of technologies such as ecological improvement, drip irrigation for salt reduction, subsurface pipe salt drainage, and integrated water and fertilizer management. In 15 to 20 days, soil salinity can be rapidly reduced from above 1.0% to below 0.3%, meeting the requirements for normal growth of vegetable crops. At present, 7 kinds of vegetables including eggplant, tomato, cucumber, chili pepper, asparagus, okra and others have been planted, growing well, basically achieving safe production in facility agriculture in coastal heavily saline-alkali areas.

After a snowfall, the reporter came to the institute's experimental field in Caofeidian. Inside the greenhouse vegetable sheds, abundant greenery greeted the eye, and vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers on the trellises were growing vigorously. "Do not underestimate these seemingly ordinary greenhouse vegetables. They are 'of poor origin and successfully turned things around.'" said researcher Zhang Guoxin, the main person in charge of this research. According to the introduction, the soil in the coastal areas of Hebei is heavy in texture and high in salinity, especially in offshore areas, where soil salinity is above 1.0% and crops cannot grow.

With the rapid development of Hebei Province's port economy, coastal areas have an urgent need to develop facility ecological agriculture. The research conducted by the institute on a high-efficiency facility agriculture utilization model for heavily saline-alkali land has achieved the goal of directly using coastal saline soil. The technology is highly safe and operable, with remarkable results, providing technical support for the high-efficiency utilization of heavily saline-alkali land in coastal areas. At present, agricultural companies in places such as Huanghua and Caofeidian will apply the results of this technology. (Reporters Huang Zhishan, Wang Aimin)
