Chinese scientists crack the secret of vegetable domestication

The research team led by Wang Xiaowu at the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, conducted an in-depth study on the domestication of two Brassica crops, Chinese cabbage and cabbage, revealing the relationship between domestication and the subgenomes formed by ancient polyploidization. The related research results were published online on August 15 in Nature Genetics.

To solve the above puzzle, the team led by researcher Wang Xiaowu completed genome resequencing of representative materials of Chinese cabbage and cabbage vegetable crops, and constructed a population genomic variation map of Chinese cabbage and cabbage vegetables. They separately identified a large number of genomic signals and related genes for leaf head formation and swollen root (stem) domestication selection in Chinese cabbage and cabbage. The study obtained a large number of variations across the whole genomes of Chinese cabbage and cabbage vegetable crops, and identified a batch of important genes related to leaf head formation and root (stem) swelling in Chinese cabbage and cabbage vegetables, laying an important foundation for accelerating molecular breeding of Chinese cabbage and cabbage vegetables.
