Zhenjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences successfully cultivates two new melon varieties

Recently, two melon varieties, "Jiami Cui" and "Ruiyue", carefully cultivated by the Zhenjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Jiangsu Province, were officially harvested and introduced to the market. The successful cultivation of these varieties effectively solved problems such as low fruit set and heavy farming workload in melon planting in the hilly areas of the province.

Since the two varieties are specially "customized" for Jiangsu Province, they have stronger adaptability to soil and offer relatively high economic benefits and broad market prospects. At present, the two melons take about 30 days from flowering and fruit setting to fruit maturity, with a yield of 4000 kg to 5000 kg. Calculated at the current market price of 6 yuan per kg, the output value per mu will reach about 30,000 yuan.

According to Ma Zhihu, the breeder of the varieties, melons used to be mostly grown with vertical cultivation, which resulted in low fruit set and susceptibility to disease. The new varieties only require simple trailing cultivation, and the fruit is high-yielding, high-quality, and welcomed by the market. No pesticides are needed, and there is no pollution. At present, this technology has obtained an invention patent certificate from the National Intellectual Property Administration, passed the provincial crop variety appraisal, and is suitable for early spring planting throughout the province.
