Baled in 2 minutes, vegetable waste turns into feed

Science and Technology Daily, Lanzhou, June 28 (Di Jin, Du Ying) Cauliflower stems and leaves plus corn stalks, through baling and wrapping, undergo lactic acid bacteria fermentation under anaerobic conditions, ultimately forming a new type of composite silage feed. This was the scene reporters observed on the 28th at an on-site demonstration in Peijiayao Village, Yuzhong County, Lanzhou City.

As an important production base for national plateau summer vegetables, Yuzhong County has seen rapid industrial development in recent years, yet the problem of vegetable waste pollution from nearly 1 million tons per year has increasingly attracted widespread social attention.

It is understood that the Gansu Academy of Mechanical Sciences began research and development of silage harvesting machinery in September 2013. The developed trailed pickup baler uses a chain-roller external wrapping baling structure, which can press and bale silage crops with a moisture content above 65% and a certain amount of plant fiber into high-density bales, featuring high bale density, good fermentation quality, high production efficiency, and ease of maintenance. "It can bale one package of feed in 2 minutes and process 15 tons of product in 1 hour, solving the key technical problem of vegetable waste treatment in Yuzhong County. As supporting agricultural machinery, it can be applied to the harvesting of most crops," said Zhang Dejian, deputy director of the academy.
